It's been a while since I shot my friend and New York musician Julie Smith, and we've both come a long ways since. You can hear Julie
on MySpace here .
These photos have been presented
as part of a collaboration with fellow Flickrite and Utatan Myla Kent as part of a Utata project. We've integrated two portrait shoots we did with our friend, and Myla presented the images with her characteristic grace. You can see them much larger and with an in-depth discussion
at the project page .

You have all the prettiest friends...
Really nice portrait with exceptionally
bright eyes, a slight shame it's not got the
85mm's bokeh, though this lens is not too
bad, which would have made it perfect...

Wow, great! What a rich backlit portrait.
The ringlets of hair go very well with the
round blur highlights

Incredible portrait. Man, you have to tell me
how do you get those wonderful skin tones and
light in the face!

whoa! She IS really pretty.......but to me,
this isn't geeky in the least bit. In fact,
most of the girls in this group aren't geek
girls at all. But, that's just my
opinion.....carry on.

Just because she might not look geeky,
doesn't make her not geeky. She's a big ol'
geek.

This is my favorite of the series... what a
great idea!
Now, did you use any fill light on this?
It looks like it, but I can't see anything in
the EXIF about flash.

Thanks, Michael! No fill-light. I did some
with fill as well, but I liked a simple
exposure on the face better.

Ryan, I just looked at the project page that
I found through Myla's stream. What a great
job you both did! You both have a similar
style and feel to your work, but you also
have your own unique approach. Excellent job!

I read a joke in Musician magazine that went
something like this, "A woman goes up to
a saxophonist after he's finished playing for
the night and says, 'I've never heard playing
like that. When I heard you tonight, I wanted
to take you home and make love to you all
night." The saxophonist replies, 'Was
that the first or the second set?'"
I said that to confess my own geekiness. I
see a beautiful woman like Julie, and all I
can think about is what an amazing lens that
17-5mm is. I know, sad.
All kidding aside, this is a a wonderful
portrait of a beautiful artist. All of your
images are great, and I always look forward
to seeing them. Oh yeah, and I want that
lens!
