Just Another Brick in the Wall

Just Another Brick in the Wall by Ryan Brenizer.

I've mentioned before that my personal tastes vary a bit from the norm. This is probably a good example. I have little idea what y'all will think, but this is probably one of my favorite shots I've taken all year.

Well it's properly exposed, her gaze is perfect, you're using their heads as the horizon, plenty of background texture. I think it's a great candid shot. And every shot defines who you are. Looks like a really uninteresting board meeting.

I think it's fantastic and love the lady with the updo and glasses in the background. Bricks are cool too.

It's excellent.
Although I love the posed wedding shots and even the candids taken in that environment, these are the more documentarian type shots and I love them because they are very real.

i love the expression on her face and the disinterested 'updo' lady(thanks for the name*Cinnamon) in the floral dress :) this photo is a little more challenging than the wedding ones that's for sure.

oh, and is the strange bulging effect of the brickeh an optical illusion caused by the lighting from on top?

I kind of want to say that I hate this, just to play Devil's Advocate, and mix up the comments a bit, but I can't. Updo lady is indeed awesome (she is in the WRONG generation!), and I love the muted tones in contrast with the neon-colored exit sign.

I didn't need to look at your tags to know you'd used your 85mm. The out of focus brick pattern is mesmerising.

i think the scene is great... to be picky: i'm on the fence on whether i'd want the beehive lady to be in focus as well. she seems so much part of the scene. and the guy hiding behind the woman in the front bugs the hell outta me :)

but yeah, i can see why you'd dig the shot and I think it works.

Fabulous! One person in focus, but the eye is drawn to so much more! The corner EXIT is a nice catch.

From the lady with the colored glasses, the many plastic cups, partial brick wall, the EXIT sign, and the balance of heads aligned in the back...yeah, its a great shot! And then you still think like the lady in focus. Lots of essence and query.

May I ask, what you like about it in particular? Don´t get me wrong, i don´t think its bad, the composition and the "EXIT" sign, plus all the characters are nice, but one of the best all year? Can you elaborate that?

Cheers, Chock Dee

Ryan Brenizer  Pro User  says:

Chock: In the end, photography is a matter of taste, and your taste is formed by your experiences. People who look at a LOT of photography, particularly of a certain sort, start to develop particular aversions and attractions. Chase Jarvis recently had a post where he was talking about revising his portfolio, and how a major art buyer loved the shots that almost all of his readers hated. I've seen and taken more classroom shots than anyone has a right to, and I've never seen one like this. It works for me when I pull out, and it works for me when I zoom in. The weight of the frame works, I feel an underlying tension, the bokeh creates one optical effect with the bricks, another with the coffee cups, and yet another with the layers of people, all of whom are perfectly placed. It's like a 3D version of one of my favorite Bresson photos.

All a matter of taste, though -- and I don't believe that the photographer has any particular "taste advantage" one he's taken the photo, he's just the first viewer. I have images on Flickr that have hundreds of faves that I don't particularly care for.
