The 24-inch iAltar
I've had the new 24-inch iMac for about two weeks now. I just needed to have the time and patience to showcase it in a non-boring way.
Big is not the word for this. The 20-inch iMac is big. I would use "scares small children." It's bright enough that when I have it on and the lights off, I can comfortably read across the room. It's also extremely fast, especially with the high-end graphics card I had installed. I'm not a gamer, but I've been playing a couple games just because I feel it would be wrong not to. My old PowerBook almost feels broken in comparison, especially the dim screen. I keep jabbing at the brightness button to no avail.
It even makes a great, full HD-ready entertainment system ... if you live in an NYC apartment. 24 inches is ludicrous from working distance, but less overwhelming from 30 feet away.
Strobist: iMac logo illuminated by carefully activated SB-600. Rest of light is ambient.

Gotta agree, 24" of work area is nice. :-)

Thanks, all! @moretrees: I admit to taking photos just for the joy of post-processing them on this. Good thing I am very close to a Photoshop-free workflow -- I usually just use it for output sharpening.

Nicely lit shot Ryan, damn sharp for a 6 second exposure. Way to sit still! Great looking monitor.

In a typical NYC apartment, how the hell do you get 30 feet away from anything and still remain inside the building?
Cool chiaroscuro. Reminded me a little of an updated Joseph Wright of Derby.

I like your concept of how you put the image together Ryan. Of course, your description is very good. Very cool shot and nicely done. (123)

Simon: I may have been unclear, but that was my point. It's perfect from the 10-foot max that an NYC apartment provides. My sister's place in Austin? Her entertainment room has an 18-hole golf course, I think.

The question is, how does it run Photoshop in Rosetta? I just got my first Intel Macs after being a Windows user forever, but I was holding off on buying PS CS2 because I don't want to run it under Rosetta... Your opinion please, sir :-)

I like the photo....your hair looks good....is this your new alter? Are you going to start a iMAC cult in manhattan?

lol! it's like a treasure chest.
- and that children love to play flash games with these =]

well done.
Ryan Brenizer (69 months ago | reply)
VincenzoF: It runs fine, but not stellar like everything else. For some reason, some tasks appear to be affected more by Rosetta than others -- saving a 150MB TIFF took a long time, but it wasn't sluggish when editing it.

cool title, cooler iMac. I went into the Apple shop last week and saw the 23" Cinema Display, so I guess I have an idea of exactly how jealous I should be :)
You use RAW Developer, right? Significantly better then ACR or Lightroom?

Great shot... but I saw the thumbnail and all I could think of was Manservant Hecubus from Kids in the Hall.

Well, lucky you! Still working with an oldish 21inch Dell CRT which takes up most of the space in my London apartment ;-)

VincenzoF [deleted] (69 months ago | reply)
I hear that. I use Ecto to update my blogs and it was AWFUL under Rosetta. I got a Universal build beta this morning and it flat out flies. I think I'll just muddle along with Elements until CS3 comes out.
Thanks for the heads up!

hohenmagnolie: Yeah, RAW Developer is my favorite program, and smokin' on this. I've also used Lightroom beta 4 for some big shoots this week to test it out -- it's much better than beta 3, and also quite fast. Can't come quite as close to a total imaging package as RAW Developer, though.

what i like about this photo is that you rule the imac it doesn't rule you, in turn it illuminates you. you arranged the lighting, it is dark behind you, light in front of you, we know it is imac, after all you are very impressed by it. it really speaks what you want to say. i am impressed by the work you do, and the passion you have.

iMacs are lovely machines. The screen on the 17" G5 iMac I had was much better in terms of color balance and saturation than the PowerBook I use now. If you max them up at purchase time there's really no good reason for the average user to choose a MacPro over an iMac.
guphotos (69 months ago | reply)
I have been using iMac for a few months, the 17 screen has better saturations and color rendering than the regular 17 LCD.
