Love the DOF!

A sunflower peeks out of a garden along Broadway.

I'm taking an Adolescene and Literature class this month, testing new grounds, and last night I sat in the park and read Seedfolks. I recommend everyone do this -- a very quick read, and the experience helped scrub off the years of hardness and calcification I've built up from living in the city. Sorely needed.

As the dampened light of a hazy sun arose up in the sky, I slowly stretched out my body, my face daring to seek some warm light from that distant star. Before I could truly awaken, the sounds of morning quickly began to fill the quiet that had been my brief respite of night. Suddenly there were footsteps, pounding hard against the pavement. The sharp crack of firm heels, the squeak of soft sneakers and the rustle of people as they tread nearby. With each moment the sounds become more muffled into one indistinguishable reverberation of feet padding off to some business or pleasure unknown to me. I just seek a bit of daylight, a whisper of warmth and even a minuscule bit of refreshment. The air has developed into a thick mass of aromas that struggle with each other to prevail. I can barely breathe the soft scent of expensive perfumes that clash with the harsh aroma of the nourishments of choice, greasy dead meat and imitation foodstuffs that are foreign to me. If only I could bathe in a cool drink of fresh water, but I struggle just to grasp at the splash of dirty wet drainage as vehicles pass and hit the puddle of murkiness created from the early morning street cleaner that merely wets the dirty trash that gathered from the day before. The morning may be difficult, but I choose to stand up straight, to seek that of which I dream and to show the world that I am beautiful. Few may notice me, but maybe someday someone will and for that I keep my head high. I have some bit of my own brilliance to offer, if only someone could see me.
