Adobe Lightroom 2.5 corruption of Sony raw files

Adobe Lightroom 2.5 corruption of Sony raw files by mr. nightshade.
The transition areas on high-contrast (blown highlights) in Sony compressed-RAW (cRAW) files from the Sony 850 and 700 get the maddening artifacts when using Lightroom 2.5's raw converter.

Any files exported, whether TIFFs or JPGs, show the same problems.

The artifacts only appear when using Lightroom 2.5; Sony's RAW Image Converter displays the same images fine.

UPDATE: It appears that raw files from many different cameras are affected (including Olympus and Pentax) so hopefully a fix from Adobe will be even more expedient.

looks like this is a case of overflow wraparound in a variable, i.e. a large positive integer value becomes negative because the msb becomes 1.

you should report the problem to Lightroom.

i hope the problem is not in the cRAW files generated by the camera, because if that was the case, you'd be screwed. if you want, send me one of the cRAW file and i'll try to convert it with another version of the adobe camera-raw converter.

Thanks, but I know it's (fortunately) just Lightroom: I opened the offending files in Sony's RAW Image Converter (the newest version) and no such artifacts appeared.

The problem is, however, any exported JPGs from Lightroom 2.5 exhibit the same artifacts.

And yes: I'm reporting it to Adobe/LR right away.

Just because Sony's converter doesn't have the same problem doesn't mean it couldn't be in the camera - wouldn't be the first time a vendor has kludged around a problem in software!

Still, it does seem more likely that Lightroom is wrong.

The problem is visible on my A700 as well, which I've been using for years. Upon reverting to LR 2.4 the problem goes away.

The thread is here: forums.adobe.com/message/2263340

It's absolutely not the camera.

I discovered the same artifact phenomenon with the DNG files from the Leica M8. The artifacts were not present with Capture One raw converter. Most importantly, reverting back to ACR 5.3 and Lightroom 2.3 eliminated this problem. An Adobe fix is required!!!!!

But even without this bug, the conversions for sony files blow.
So . . . moot point?
