Secret Service Officer, Tibetan Independence Rally IMGP0733

Secret Service Officer, Tibetan Independence Rally IMGP0733 by carlweaver.
In front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC

This officer harassed me and said I was not allowed to take photos of the embassy or be on the sidewalk in front of the embassy. I stood my ground and told her that it was public property and that I was allowed to be there. After about a minute of arguing she checked my press pass and left me alone.

Complain to the police department about this individual, and make it clear that you will not tolerate violations of your civil rights by anybody.

I made it clear by standing up to her. She did nothing illegal, just deceptive. It's BS, as Max says, but filing a complaint about something so trivial just makes me look like an ass. In other words, when I pick my life's battles, complaining to the Secret Service that one of their officers lied to me about something and backed off when I asserted my rights is not the battle I choose to fight.

If she had touched me...

Calub, calling the HQ won't do anything. I was not illegally detained, beaten or anything else. The cop was doing her job, trying to keep order. She didn't prevent me from doing what I was legally doing. So what's to complain about to HQ? "Hi. Officer Q told me I wasn't allowed to do something I am allowed to do and did not prevent me from doing it after some initial resistance. I want to lodge a formal complaint."

See, the thing lots of people do not get is that it's not about being a jerk to the cops. Cops are not the enemy. They can be a great ally. Going around trying to get people in trouble who are legally doing their jobs is what makes us look like asses. The goal should be to have a good working relationship, not to find a fight at every turn.

I suspect you don't need help looking that way anyhow, from the tone of your comment.
