I can't believe I might have to explain what this is, it's sort of like explaining the pencil, but apparently in modern printing production the proportion wheel is nowhere to be found. We used this to figure out what percentage to reduce or enlarge images in the preparation of negatives, and to figure out cropping to a set amount of space.
Apparently C-Thru still sells these.
My wife is currently instructing 2d-year college design students on how to use a T-square. I mean, really.

In the old days when images were resized through the use of copying cameras, you needed to do the math before making the shot, because you had to set the percentage of reduction on the camera itself. It's essentially useless knowledge at this point -- Photoshop and other programs don't require you know the scale before you can resize the picture.

I used to use a proportion wheel way back when I was a typesetter on traditional typesetting equipment. Now, I'm a graphic designer working on a Mac and once in a while I need to confer with my trusty wheel. However, nowadays, there are all sorts of online versions.
