Zero Button Testing

To take full advantage of Flickr, you should use a JavaScript-enabled browser and
install the latest version of the Macromedia Flash Player.

A blue background indicates a routine that passes all its tests.

Pink indicates a routine that fails at least one test; it also indicates the failed test(s).

The expect...returns syntax says that with a given input, we expect a certain output.

Yellow, here, indicates a routine that is not completely test-covered.

Lines that are not executed by any test are shown in yellow.

Note that only the failing tests of a failing routine are colored pink.

This is just a prototype, designed to answer the question: What would programming look like if testing were built in to the language. "Zero button" refers to the notion that errors are shown automatically, without clicking any buttons, as you type.

Using background color for error coloring leaves text color available for traditional syntax coloring.

Well... Sort of. A friend and I are taking over responsibility for the Continuous Testing Plugin for Eclipse, originally developed by David Saff. It's got a lot of the same ideas underlying it, but it's applicable to real code. We are just barely beginning to take this on, and I have no idea of a timeframe. It's a tricky project for me, and I don't know how ZBT-like it can ultimately become; there are serious challenges to making this real in the context of an actual, useful, programming language, and Eclipse plugin programming is (mostly) new to us. But I hope something good can come of it. If you're a Java developer and you don't mind using a relatively old version (3.1) of Eclipse, you can try it out yourself: groups.csail.mit.edu/pag/continuoustesting/
