Geodesic Dome

Geodesic Dome by caribb.
Buckminister Fuller's Geodesic Dome designed for Canada's Expos 67 in Montreal. This structure caught fire in the 70s so it no longer remains enclosed but it's shape is perfectly preserved and still stands as a landmark for the city.

Thanks! It is still a highly respected design even today. Too bad the glass or plexiglass panels went up in flames though.

samboha - thanks! Yes I agree it does look artificial.. it is one of the city's more interesting structures. It sits on a small island on the St Lawrence near downtown. During Expo67 it had the world's longest escalator inside going from the ground up to the top level inside and it was the USA Pavillion during the World Exhibition.

Peter Ellis - I was just a little kid but so did I. I think I went over 60 times and had two or three passports filled up.. it was so much fun! I still remember it very well.

burt_frogblast & Anton Schedlbauer - THanks very much

myronhensel - It is quite cool, hope you see it some day.

gilly youner - Wow that's cool. Which ones did he design? I was just a little kid then but I remember Expo67 well none the less. This US Pavillion was a highlight. It is neat in skeletal form but it was amazing when covered it. I recall lots of birds living inside and a gigantic escalator which I think at the time was the longest in the world. To maintain heat or air conditioning though must have cost a fortune.
If you check this link and scroll down the page you can see a picture of it on fire:

wish I could remember-he told me several times,...but he designed so many exhibits, including at the World's Fair 1964 in NY, and some in Israel in the 70's...I do remember the futuristic, fun and cool feeling of being at all the Expos and Fairs...and so optimistic!

gilly youner - That's a shame you don't remember. You are right about the optimism of the fairs though. Expo67 was the first big event in my life and as a little kid I remember so many people coming to stay with us so they could go visit the expositions. All these years later I still have fond memories of them with the monorails whipping around and all the excitement and long lines to get into the pavillions. The Czech, Russian, Canadian and American ones were most popular.. also China.. always long lines and waits to get it. The French pavillion today is Montreal's casino and it too was really amazing then as it is still now. They just don't design buildings like this anymore.
