RESTORED BY: Darina Todorova (Stamford, CT) ||| FAMILY: Virginia Donnelly ||| Belle Harbor, Queens, NY LOCATION: ||| *This was an absolutely mammoth photo stuck behind glass. It was re-photographed rather than scanned so as to not peel away even more emulsion. The family presented a mere 2 photos. ||| "This photo was taken inside the Daily News (Liberty Park) Plant in Jersey City, New Jersey after the plant became fully operational. When you look at the workers in the photo, you can see they are happy. This plant was opened after a period of labor inequities, strikes and a succession of new owners for the newspaper. Finally, the newspaper was sold to its current owner Mortimer Zuckerman. New labor contracts were drawn up and the labor unions accepted the contracts. This new plant, with the existing employees manning the printing presses showed the commitment the new owner had to the newspaper. The men were happy to have their jobs and some security for the future. (The old plant was located in downtown Brooklyn and has been converted to expensive condominiums). The photo was taken in the early 1990s. The men in the photo are pressman. The men in the front row with the light blue shirts are foremen. My husband is wearing a light blue shirt and is to the right of the man in the red turtleneck when you look at the photo. I am grateful to have the photograph back. Not only does it represent family history, it is a piece that represents American labor heritage. Thank-you so much for adopting my photo."
