John Huston - my photo realistic (I hope) pencil drawing of him
a fresh scan of a pencil drawing I made while taking a ten week photo realistic portrait pencil drawing course - about 30 hours of work went into this......and given my total lack of patience, I came to a better understanding of why I love photography and its quickness
having said that, I am going to reignite my pencil drawing efforts this fall and winter - simplicity is a strong magnet right now
Nice work. I took a drawing course
left-handed out of necessity. It was fun but
I don't have the patience. I also found that
I can shoot hundreds of images and get a few
dozen through post-production faster than I
could do one pencil sketch.
The portrait looks very Hemingway. [edit] It does also look like john Huston.
In front portrait they would look similar.
When I took the course, the teacher set it up
so that we ended up copying from a photograph
of our choosing. We did quite a lot of
drawing from direct life through the course.
It was only 12 weeks but he loaded on the
home work as well. I remember one of his
remarks from the course, that when he worked,
he spent 50% of the time looking and 50%
drawing. this is his web site
I may need my eyes checked but Hemingway and
Huston don't look much alike. Huston long
faced, Papa had a roundish face....my course
instructor for the pencil drawing talked
about face types in the mode of Bert and
Ernie......for what that's worth

For what it is worth...
When I first saw the thumbnail, I was
tricked into thinking that this was an actual
photograph and I had a sensation of
"recognising" the subject.
This comes from someone who knows nothing
about drawing.
I'll stick to photography. That is enough
of a struggle as it is...
Very, very good. I thought it was a photo of
the man himself.

actually the teacher is a bloody genius, the
whole class, many who had never drawn before,
through his teaching and coaching on the
final exercise, created magnificent drawings
they all thought I was crazy having to put
in so much texture by choosing the old Huston
photo, many did babies or children....I had a
hard time blending a smooth consistent tone,
so I thought they were crazy - tremendous
teacher (see the link in a comment of mine
above)
