SAN ANDREAS, Calif. -- Maggie, a 25-year-old African elephant, checks out her new home at Performance Animals Welfare Society, or PAWS, after the journey from Anchorage, Alaska, to here on a Air Force C-17 Globemaster III Nov. 2. Maggie's trainers from the Alaska Zoo said the elephant handled the trip well and will stay at PAWS for several weeks to help her adjust to life in the sanctuary. (U.S. Air Force Photo by Tech. Sgt. The sores on Maggie's body will soon heal. (Maggie developed a habit of deliberately breaking her skin by rubbing her flesh against the rough brick of her zoo pen, much like a depressed teen who cuts herself. Now that she has acres to roam and four African female elephants to bond with - one of them from Zimbabwe like herself - Maggie can begin to heal from the psychological and physical trauma she endured for many years in captivity.)

Maggie and Pat Derby in what is a new and wonderful home for Mags!
These snaps are a little fuzzy because they are live cam stills. Maggie was flown by the US Airforce from Alaska on a 5-hour flight. She arrived at PAWS this afternoon. Here is some excellent footage of Maggie in her new home. She is obviously thrilled beyond measure with her new surroundings and companions. Many thanks to Friends of Maggie who fought for so long for her freedom, and to Bob Barker and PAWS for the wonderful support. BLESS YOU ALL!
