Too much fresh manure - carrots need rich soil but the nutrients have to be old. In fact, for show quality carrots plant the seeds in a cone of sand and they will grow to a regular shape.

Interesting. The plot we got in our community garden was filled with 100% mushroom compost, because they didn't have any soil. It's been great for the kale, but that explains the oddly shaped carrots.
