Avalanche Lake

Avalanche Lake by jtsteeves.
To be honest, I was not all that impressed with the lake itself. Avalanche Gorge was way cooler. That's not to say, however, that the hike wasn't worth it. It is just that I have seen cooler/more stunning mountain lakes.

The hike up there was awesome, especially along the gorge. If you just do the "Trail of the Cedars", you will miss out on a lot of really cool stuff. Even if you just go up the Avalanche Lake Trail a little ways, you will get way cooler views of the gorge then if you just look at it from the bridge.

I think what is cool about this lake is; that all those trees and the stumps further out in the lake, are there because of avalanches. I also thought the broken off trees on the mountain side above the lake were interesting.

Thanks! It wasn't all like this, this is just the outlet. If you go further up and around the bend there, it looks like your photo. I have pictures from up there and out on a rock like yours, but I thought this was the best photo of it. I guess I don't mean that it wasn't cool, it just wasn't as cool as some alpine lakes that I've seen.

Avalanche lake is best later in the year than when this pic was taken (great angle, love the trees in the foreground.) Once all the snow is gone on the slopes beyond the lake you can see dozens of waterfalls cascading down the cliffs from Sperry Glacier into Avalanche Basin.
