Each manuscript is one of its kind and has a unique form because it is linked to a series offortuitous, unrepeatable factors: its historical context, the precise moment in time, the calligrapherís hand and his emotions. Hence, theory leads us to create an alphabetic style for each manuscript work. So, in the case of a non-Latin alphabet, in this case, Greek, the investigation might be even more intriguing.
During a calligraphy course of this kind, it is usually the teacher who provides a pre-constructed and elaborated model of writing.
In the first phase of this course each student will address, with the support of the teacher, the fascinating study of letters, first through the use of facsimiles, then with the original manuscript in our hands during the session in the Library for the Florence Workshop.
The aim of this residence course is to explore the possibilities of contemporary calligraphy by studying some original Greek manuscripts preserved at the Medici Library designed by Michelangelo, called "Laurenziana" in Florence. It is one of the most prominent collections in Italy and worldwide.

On one of the days of the course we will travel to Florence to sightsee and continue our work in a beautiful room of the Laurenziana Library to view and study directly on the original manuscripts. There will be able to fully appreciate the quality of the strokes in the writing, the rhythms of the handwritten pages, ligatures between letters, spacing, ink, colors, all of which contain unique beauty.
Then, we use the "orthodox" forms and rhythms of our manuscript to develop the more creative aspects of the handwriting, freely transforming them into Latin letters, at first, and then elaborating a "new" rhythm and dynamics. At this point, though it will probably still be illegible, rooted in historical forms of the past. Our intention, therefore, is to breathe new life into the letters and rhythms of the past by passing them through the filter of our own personality, sensitivity, experience and emotions, to make them once again unique and unrepeatable. It is a revival that occurs in the creative process. With the help of the teacher. and by following a special method, each student will undertake practical exercises and use alternative and unusual writing tools with a background of sounds, music and images. And, we will also have the chance to draw inspiration from by the wonderful setting of the Tuscan hills.
To conclude, we propose to design and bind a ì personal bookî, to give a new form and lease on life to the original manuscript, the starting point of our fascinating journey through the art of writing.
No special know-how or experience is needed to take part in the course, and it is therefore open to everyone. It is, however, particularly suitable for those who are involved in the world of creativity and images such as designers, typedesigners, painters, graphic artists, etc.
