Eye

Eye

My photography time was limited lately, but i shot this 14mm detail from the new EYE building in Amsterdam. (EYE houses the Dutch Film Institute.) For anyone who likes minimalism!

And i set up Smplify — a Tumblr for inspiring photography. Smplify is an online mood board showing strong, conceptual, minimalist photographs with no words or explanations. Smplify does the hard work for you by simply selecting the most interesting photographs on the web and displaying them in an elegant on-going feed.

Take a look and let me know what you think of it!

See you soon! — Paul

One of the photographers i look up to is Jing Huang. He shoots with a classic Leica M4-P. Analog, preferably with Ilford HP5 film. His photos are much inspired by his cultural heritage. Jing: “Chinese express emotions through metaphor.” Of course, as a Dutchman, i can (and will) not compete with what Jing Huang has naturally. But, i can try bringing more poetry in my work. Increase expressiveness. Tell a story, like a song lyric.

This is one of the last pictures made with my X1. i’ll swap it for a M9-P. Goodbye friend, it was great!

Hello Summilux

Hello Summilux

This might be “old news” for those who follow me. i waited almost a year for this lens and it finally arrived. The Leica Summilux-M 50 mm f/1.4 ASPH. Also called the best 50mm in the world. Optical and mechanical perfection. Beautifully hand crafted by our neighboring friends in Germany. A masterpiece representing the true essence of photography.

But one problem, i’m still waiting for a Leica M Body... :)

Red Bike, Blue Bokeh

Red Bike, Blue Bokeh

Back in Amsterdam with the 50mm 1.4 Nikkor. For ordinary (read: completely sharp pictures) images it is a useless lens. Take a 35mm instead. But when it starts to get dark and you are looking for hidden bokeh treasures, this nifty fifty begins to shine. i love the sparkling effect of the Chinese lanterns in the shop window. Made possible by the red bike :) If you have 1.4, use it fully open!

Thanks for your comments and faves. Have a great week all! —Paul
