week 32 of the 52 (only 20 more to go!)

Green - it's not just a color...and it isn't always easy (just ask Kermit), but it's pretty darn important.

We’ve recently moved from a rural location to a condo in the big city and I am finding it complicated to maintain the green lifestyle I am used to. No yard for compost, must hang laundry inside, ect. But I’m making adjustments and staying as green as possible.

Share your big city green ideas with me please. :)

Nice shot. Very straightforward and well composed. Being green can be difficult, but if everyone were to make a few sacrifices, everyone would reap a great reward. Keep it up!

You need some hippy green tinted glasses then everything will be green :)
Great portrait, do you defuse the flash?

@ I agree with you completely. Just bought my new recycle bins last week. :)

@ This one was shot with a proper studio strobe in a softbox. ;)

I really like this shot - great light and composition. Green issue important too. In our city the council supplies bins for rubbish, recyclables and green waste. I guess that's not much help to you though. Perhaps you could try a small worm farm. We had one but couldn't keep the worms alive in the summer heat :(

Thanks Greg. :) I had an amazing collection of worms in my compost when we lived in Thailand. What is a worm farm? It is some sort of contained compost?

Damn, after all my shots about being green, I feel I should be giving you great tips (I live in the "big city" of Montréal after all)! Hanging laundry inside is a great idea. We do that very often even though we have a clothesline, we can't really use it in the winter.

I can't think of any great tips right now but now that you're in a big city, you probably can manage to limit your car traveling much more and use public transportation instead.

One last thing about being green in the city but we always forget, it's so much easy to buy all sorts of things...just thinking twice before doing so can really help limit the quantity of waste.

By the way, I think the gray background really make the color pop out nicely.

Thank you , , , and

Alex - if you think of any good tips for me post them up. I might write up the things that we ARE doing and post them here too. I was considering it yesterday and realized there are a LOT of things we do that are so normal, I don't even think of them anymore, like turning the power off at the outlet (kill your vampire load!)...

City or town, tent or rural, green is green and here are some things to make work:

1. Turn off the lights! Everyone thinks green is just about recycling.
2. Use your own canvas bag when you shop. Don't take the plastic bags from anywhere
3. Turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth, shampooing your hair, or shaving. Turn it on when you need to rinse
4. Put lights on timers if you can't be around to turn them off
5. Shred paper and use it for packing material, etc.
6. Change your air filters every 3 months
7. Combine trips. Use the car only when you have to and make as many trips as possible when you take it out.
8. Get a bike if you live in the city. It's the best for short trips.

thank you so much :)

awesome suggestions! Thanks for that. The only one I don't do already is the paper shredding for packing. We do however recycle the paper - does that count? :) Oh - and the bike. I just walk. ;)

- thank you - you are very kind :)

Lovely as always, Athena......I'd like to see some detail in the hair though.....and your laugh/smile lines,(around the mouth), are just a little under processed considering the main light angle.
And......green is great! But, there is more to life than green.....:).....Bob

Not too many green ideas for a small space (I think Greg's worm farm is a good one), but it's a beautiful portrait Athena. Very nice separation from the background, and your skin looks amazing as always. Great freckles!

Thanks for your lovely comments Tim. :o) (especially the freckles one!)

The processing on this was a very, very light version of a "like Dave Hill" tutorial over in the Strobist group. I just wrote myself a note to send you the link when I get home. ;o)
