FAQ: http://www.biscade.com/office/
Left to right: 15" MacBook Pro, 3 x 20" portrait mode HP 1200 x 1600, 2 x 30" 2560 x 1600, and 1 x 20" HP portrait mode 1200 x 1600. Not including the laptop, it's 9920 x 1600.
My desk system has a lot of drawers--Here you can see the two lateral file drawers + one pedestal file + two pencil drawers. There are two other pencil drawers and one other pedestal file drawer elsewhere in the desk.

I hope you appreciate the fact that we now use LCD screen instead of CRT screens ;)

Nice office! I think you need some more monitors, though. I don't know how you can work on only six.
mitch haile (36 months ago | reply)
Don't worry, I have 6 more elsewhere. :-)

Mitch,
Beautiful office! I just saw your setup mentioned on Lifehacker, so I imagine you'll be seeing some more traffic on here and your FAQ.
I do have one question I didn't see in the FAQ:
I've seen other multi-monitor set-ups where the monitors are arranged in two "rows", one on top of the other. Did you consider going for a 4960x3200 desktop, instead of 9920x1600? I'm just curious about the pro/con of doing it either way.
Thanks.

@jbhenry Many years ago I did experiments with 5120 x 2048 using 8 x 1280 x 1024 screens. I found two layers of monitors was just too overwhelming and gave me headaches:

9920 is _very_ wide. However, I have two discrete sets of debuggers on the extremities and don't need to see both of the very ends at the same time all the time. So the neck stretch is not bad. Also, the Aeron swings very with little force compared to my old chair.
Thanks for the post

Great office. I have been considering the same line of furniture, but was not really happy with the keyboard tray solution offered. Your keyboard shelf/tray looks great and is pretty much what I was looking for. Was this a do-it-yourself project?
Great to see another Unix person who is also a Mac person.
Thanks.
mitch haile (36 months ago | reply)
All the keyboard tray consists of is a 6 ft 1x12 pine shelf ($10 at Home Depot), and 4 L-brackets. Total cost was about $15.
At some point I'd like to buy another 72" credenza and put it on Ikea Galant legs for a nicer lowered keyboarding surface, but I'm not annoyed with this solution enough yet. I've been using this type of home made keyboard surface for about 4-5 years, no complaints, especially on the price.
I used to use a $300 Kensington adjustable tray at a day job; certainly you can mount any kind of adjustable surface to the bottom of this desk. Kinesis sells some 30" wide platforms. But I've found having a silly wide shelf works better for me.

Have you found a good DVI KVM to recommend?
mitch haile (36 months ago | reply)
I am using this dual-link DVI iogear. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016BCIXE
Seems to work great.

how did you manage to connect all those screens to a single macbook?
AleksMaksimow [deleted] (35 months ago | reply)
JPM: They are all connected to a Mac Pro, not an MacBook.

The monitor set up looks fantastic. You cannot have too many screens!
Clever use of shelving too.
I love this office!

Probably the most massive screen setup I have seen in long time in _home_ office.

Mitch,
Nice setup... I was wondering what's your internal network speed, and your hardwood floor.. what's the name of the floor
thank you
mitch haile (27 months ago | reply)
The internal networks are GigE (two networks; one for the house in general, one for test).
The floor is oak with cherry stain and a few coats of poly.

Hello Mitch,
I really like what you have done with your office.
I am having a hard time deciding what multi-monitor setup will be most productive for doing development. I am thinking of buying 3 X 30" monitors. Given a choice would you replace your setup with 4 X 30" monitors doing away with the 4 20" monitors or did you specifically want the smaller screens and why?
Also, where did you get you desk from and what kind of wood is it?
Thanks for your help.
mitch haile (13 months ago | reply)
I have since changed the set up to 3x30 + 1x20. See www.biscade.com/office/
For coding, I like having vertical screens. But the main reason I bought them initially was price. :-)
For things like PowerPoint or other "more horizontal" documents, wide screen is better, which is why I changed--I wanted more than one screen I could look at large, single windows.
The desk is a cherry color. See the above link for more info on it.
