Thank you so much for posting this amazing idea. My son was just the Grinch in the musical, Seussical, and we had to bring treats to the cast party. I adapted mine a little. I didn't know how to make the whole kiwi stand up, so I cut the kiwis and Strawberries in half to be able to lay them in a tray. Also, I cut yellow skittles in half for the eyes and used red gel to make the red part. The skittles were a little hard to get to stick, so I carved a little nitch to push them in. I also used a steak knife like yourself and found it a little hard. I was thinking about this for next time and was remembering a little tool for making pottery that has like a small loop on the end for making details in the clay. That might work, so I will be looking for that next time I go to an art supply store. Thank you again for posting this as it was a hit at the party and my Grinch was very happy with them.
