John Deere

John Deere by greg.newman.
While trying to shoot a rather boring sunrise yesterday I stumbled upon this abandoned John Deere Tractor sitting in a nice cluster of colorful leaves.

Sigma 10-20mm

Greg, I love this composition and color treatment. A nice tribute to the (formerly) humble tractor!

Great job on controlling the exposure. I think you've definitely got the hang of the GNDs now. Really the only crit I could give you on this is to start to be aware of exactly where you grad line falls. Many times it's difficult to make the filter seem completely unapparent. This is mostly when things are sticking up into the top of the shot....like in this pic. It get's hard because the filter not only touches the sky, which you want...but the tractor, which you could do without. I can see where the grad line falls on the hood of the Deere as it starts to darken a tad. There are ways to get aroud this though. You can simply add a curves layer and raise the exposure, then fill the mask with black and paint back in the raised exposure where you need it, smoothing out the darkened areas. If the areas that are darkened are too dark to use a curves layer, or for a cleaner result, just use an entirely different exposure. I bracket my exposures often when I think my grads will give me issues like this. I would have taken a litghter exposure, then laid it on top of the normal exposure...all of this before any processing. Then I would add a layer mask, fill with black and paint in the higher/lighter exposure where my grad was making things dark and I didn't want that. After you have this taken care of, you can continue to process like normal.

I hope this makes sence. This also works with no grad filters at all. You just have more sky to paint in, and it can be a lot of manual work if you don't know how to mask well...and I don't. You have no idea how many shots I've manually merged by hand, and how friggin long it's taken me on some. I want to puke thinking about it......zooming WAY in and doing everything by hand.. I know there's a better way. I just got a new program called Fluid Mask that I'm pretty excited about. Hopefully when I learn how to use it, it will help me with my masking and so I'll be able to handle pretty much any lighting situation when it comes to landscape.

Thanks Knottyy!
Dood, you've got a keen eye. I was all over this image in PS and never caught that on the hood. I'll have to watch that more carefully. I did go in and dodge a few areas around the top of the windshield around the lights; I saw they were darker than they should have been.

One thing I'm still not doing which I KNOW I should be is paying more attention to metering between the ground sky through. I need to work on that a bit. I probably shouldn't admit it, but I've simply been guessing which filters to use.

This week while I'm out I'm going to try hand holding the filters. All shots so far have been in the lee holder, which is fine, but not as flexible.

Fluid mask huh? Masking is not a big deal once you get the hang of it, however, I've been using PS since version 2. Let me know if this app is any better though. I'm always up to productivity boosts.

Thanks for the crit! I always appreciate that D.

Well then you're steps ahead of me, because I still have no idea how to mask anything. I just zoom in and do it all by hand. And I don't even have a Wacom yet. If I could mask better, I think my work would be a lot better...or at least I'd have a lot more finished pictures. I have lots of work no one has seen because I can't get merge the exposures correctly. I'll let you know how that program goes for me....when I actually spend some time and sit down to learn it.

Yeah, I put the hawk eyes to images for sure. It's those small details that can make or break an image in the end sometimes. I wouldn't worry to much about metering for the grads. I don't. I just do like you and guess. With time, your guesses will start to become more and more accurate. I just look at the LCD to see if I'm close, and call that good.

Next time you're in PA we'll drink some wine and have a mask lesson!

Look at the LCD << That's an issue I have yet to overcome. It always looks good on the D80 LCD until I get it into Aperture and it looks like shit. Now I'm starting to learn the discrepancy and try to adjust for it in the field. Still a challenge though.

Really great tips, Knotty....and Greg thanks for the Aperture cheat sheet downloads. I used to layer mask everything, and then I went to a workshop and everything is done via the history brush...BUT, not as easy to back track if you change your mind via this method.

You're welcome thouznwords!

The history brush huh? I'm not sure I've ever really used it; to be honest. I typically make adjustments on a new layer and erase away when I need to.
