You've turned night into day, with shooting
comets. It has good simple form and intrigue.

I like how far the waves crash to create that
flowing white canvas.
Do you shoot most of your night shots on
your D70 on 400ISO? The noise(grain) is a
bit more revealing here but you have your
exposure nailed.
f8 400ISO 319"
give
f8 200ISO 160" or
f11 200ISO 320" if you dig the star
trails at the 6 minute mark. I think the
noise will disappear.

jb, wouldn't it be 640" at iso
200...since you're going from 400iso to 200,
you need to double your time, not 1/2 it?
maybe i'm being a dunce... (still love this
shot)

I shoot at ISO 400 till the moon is half
full, 'cause i have a D70 and the NR takes
forever. After the half moon i shoot 200,
for the lower grain.
I agree with Nancy, JB; how would f11
200ISO 160" be equal to f8 400ISO
319"? He he :)

DOOH! Good thing I wasn't out shooting last
night. My conversion went the wrong way
*covers face with hands*! I *was* cleaning
my equipment for this weekend, we're
expecting snow! If you steal my stuff for
safe keeping, I can do a pinhole - then I'll
be out there for about 5 hours for 1 exposure
gah!

Love this one; the blue is so spacious and
feels so watery. That rock makes a nice
anchor.

I use the remote control shutter release,
which when used on the Bulb setting,
functions like a 'T' (Timer) setting.

Toby
I can see why this image one of your all
times favourites. It has a wonderful
simplicity and a very strong graphical
nature. It also has a wonderful cold
refreshing light, of the type you find at
night. Weird because it also looks like you
could have taken this at midday judging by
the shadows, but the star let me know its
not.
The blues are refreshing in the sea but if
I’m honest the tint of orange in the clouds
distract me a bit. I think it needs more
dodge and burn to bring it out a bit (more
contrast like the rock and the waves. I also
don’t particularly like the noise in the sky.
It seems like its two separate images, as the
sand doesn’t have any. This maybe the
conversion to web, so apologies if it is.
Right, for me he emotional response to this
image is one of calm, peace isolation. The
rock is very alone in a see of waves; you
must have been very alone when taking it.
There is the rock in the mid distance that
helps the composition leading your eye down
to the horizon, but it still is alone.
Compositionally I like the diagonals here,
you kind of zigzag your way up the image. If
I’m honest I’m not keen on the small bits and
bobs around the rock distracting the smooth
flow my eye wants to take. Id have cloned out
the darker areas in the sand (made it VERY
clean and taken out a few of the distracting
elements in the waves. Just to clean up the
image. I’m not sure what you think about
changing the image but I’m all for making it
‘perfect’, I’m not too worried about
documenting a place.
Anyway overall it’s a cracking image with a
lot going for it, nice minimalism Toby,
cheers Jason.

Hi Toby,
I like the minimalist composition and the
way the viewer's eye is led in from the
foreground rock.
I would have cloned out the other small
bits and pieces on the sand to really
minimalise the amount of distraction.
The noise in the sky and on the bottom left
area in the sand is unfortunate, you could
maybe have blurred the sand to cover it, but
not the sky because of the star trails.
The only other niggle is the amount of
barrel distortion - it's quite pronounced -
that's easy to fix with PTLens.
Overall, a very good shot, but it could be
great with a few minor tweaks.

Hey Toby,
Congrats on a great long exposure shot (5
mins!). The streaks in the sky look
fantastic.
I think the composition works quite well
and the sky and foreground are well balances,
with the rock working quite well as it is. Im
immediately drawn to the rock, and then
notice that amazing sky.
I like how there are no signs of human
life, and in a way, it could been seen as
another planet!
There are just a couple of things i would
fix in photoshop. The sky is quite noisy
(probably from the long exposure) so this
could be fixed with a blur layer, and also
there are a few rocks and details in the sand
that i'd be tempted to clone out so as to not
distract from the overall image.
I think you've captured a fantastic and
interesting shot, and definetely makes me
want to go out and experiment with looooong
exposures!

Thanks, guys, for the great critiques! I've
given it another whack in processing - I
couldn't get the colors to turn out right
after converting to sRGB for the web, but I
think the PTLens, noise reduction and removal
of stray objects really improved the image!
Here's the new one.

Hi Toby!
I'm doing my first experiments with
moonlight myself, just as an observer by now
but expecting for the next full moon eagerly.
The only problem I see with this kind of
light it's the shadows it casts under
objects, wich limits your subjects but at the
same time creates this atmosphere that
somehow reminds me "La nuit
américaine", the american night, as the
nouvelle vague french cineasts called it. And
that's the first point that really atracts me
in this picture: the atmosphere, the feeling
of emptyness and isolation. The star trails
add to this allien feeling.
The composition looks very interesting to
me. The right amount of foreground and sky,
good use of the rule of thirds, interesting
imaginary lines, trails and rock(s) pointing
to a common direction at the upper middle
right side.
The down sides on this picture have been
pointed already. The noise it's the most
noticeable, mostly in the sky as in the sand
it might even add an interesting texture. The
lens distortion in the horizon line could be
corrected since it's too noticeable, unless
you wanted a fish-eye effect and then it
should be more pronounced. The small details
on the sand and the mountains in the skyline
I would leave and I guess the composition
would look too simple without it, but this is
just my opinion and I notice I'm looking at
it AFTER your editing and re-posting!!!
All in all a good picture, technically
demanding, aesthetically interesting.

I had to put them side by side in Photoshop
to really compare and I ended up liking this
one better overall. I like the more natural
color in this one, as opposed to the super
blue in the new one, but agree with cloning
out at least the foreground rock (I kinda
like the one in the water, though). The
distortion doesn't bother me much. Love how
the big rock almost looks like it's hovering.
Anyway, awesome shot, especially for one of
your first!
