Day's End Rock

Day's End Rock by BURИBLUE.
So, I kinda skipped out on work an hour early to catch the sunset ; )

Can you blame me? I mean, I just got a D300, fer cryin out loud!

So far it's been an absolute joy to shoot with. The large viewfinder makes it much easier to compose and level landscapes vis-a-vis the D70. The autofocus is lightning fast and intuitive to play around with. I bought an MC-30 remote shutter release, and thought at first I would miss my wireless remote. No way - this one has the shutter half-press function that was sorely missing from the wireless remote.

And the image quality has been stunning, as well. I plan to take it out this evening again to shoot some long exposures under the moon. That should be the real test ; )

So I see you exposed for the sunset (which came out great), but then you also got plenty of exposure on the rocks too. Would you say that the dynamic range is better on the D300?

Oh well, that may be bad news for me (say, my wallet), as I'm planning to get a D80 early next year (as my first DSLR) but after seeing that D300's amazing dynamic range... you have just triggered an internal fight within my head.

There's a devil in one side crying aloud: 'buy the D300, it rocks!' and on the other side is the good guy whispering: 'great -but way more expensive- camera...'

Would a D300 be overkill for an amateur, casual shooter? Will I be money-careless enough to hit on the D300? (it's waiting in the local store), or will I go Scrooge and get the D80 -and keep dreaming with the D300-?

Such a drama! See what happens on the next episode =)

Happy holidays!

BURИBLUE  Pro User  says:

-dhaos- - I would actually recommend starting with the d80, and here's why. I personally believe that when you are learning photography, narrowing the complexity of the tools can be a huge benefit. For example, starting with a simple (but good quality) body and a single prime lens forces the shooter to fully explore the options within those limitations. This spurs creativity and understanding. When one then takes the next step, they have a greater appreciation for the enhanced capabilities and what they really mean for shooting.

Not to mention, gear upgrades keep you inspired! Buying the top-of-the-line all at once can be a bit of a dead-end in that sense - once you have the best of everything, it's much harder to buy a little gear to kick-start the creative impulses ; )

I used my D70 until I knew every in and out, and finally grew my skills until they surpassed the capabilities of the camera. Now I have a deep appreciation for what the D300 allows, something I might not have had if I jumped straight in.

Anyhow, just my 2 cents. Buy what makes you happy ; )

-dhaos- says:

I remember my first camera (a pentax point-and-shoot) Back then it was ok as I had very little idea about photography.

Years later I got a Canon with manual mode, then I learned about the great advantage of controlling exposure settings.

Finally I got a Nikon and understood the importance of optics.

Now, I usually find myself using manual exposure (or A, S modes) and other camera settings to get the most from each shot. Now I feel ready to 'jump' to the slr world.

But, is the D300 much harder to use than the D70?

Thank you! It's a fair advice. I think I'll get the D80. After all I have to get some glass too... =)
