Wow. I wish I could come across a stash of these from Shreveport's St. Paul's Bottoms. That was our red light district and we had 1000 girls compared to New Orleans having 2000. But the population of NO was 18 times larger than Shreveport...

Interesting. I like your name too. Your name sounds like you could have caused a lake over from Oil City to Uncertain. Hahah! Good to hear from Arklatex. Thanks!

i am very hesitant to give this a fav. my question is: does it romanticize prostitution and/or desensitize us of the true nature of prostitution?

I've viewed this photograph many times. And I must admit, I regard prostitution as very romantic. Come to think of it I do consider myself materially desensitized to the true nature of prostitution. So, if your remark was made in reference to the photograph, I am afraid the answer may be yes.

However, if you refer to the effect your giving the photograph a fave might have on society's attitude toward prostitution, don't worry. The consequence of your giving the photo a fave is essentially nil.

At most, your fave is probably just a bookmark that allows you, for reasons that are yours alone, to easily view the photograph whenever, and as often as you please.

To answer Saul Benquish. I think it romanticizes the nature of prostitution. A tragic life is romantic when it happens to somebody else, and photos do not mirror reality, we can only guess someone’s frame of mind or situation in a photo. As for desensitizing? If desensitizing in the sense that there is nothing wrong with prostitution, I think one would have to be pretty naïve to think that prostitution is a great career choice for women, (or men): the majority of the power does not sit with the prostitute. Legalizing prostitution definitely helps increase the prostitute’s power, but marginally. If desensitizing in the sense that women are objects, yes, I think this is true, but it is only true in imagination – obviously women are not objects, hence this is where their power lay (e.g. manipulating/blackmailing clients) and this is why prostitution is a tragic life. I should pipe in that sex and prostitution are not the same thing. One can be titilated by such photos, and not condone prostitution. I think this is a natural response, it is fantasy.

For me, this image and the other one's from the book do not glamorize prostitution at all. Believe me, there is nothing glamorous about the sex workers I've met. They have all been just plain working women--regular people.

That's what, for me, is so appealing about E.J. Bellocq's images from Storeyville. They just seem to be ordinary people, and sweet people at that. Just look at the portraits of the women with their little dogs.

Thank you so much for posting these. I often go to the library to look at this book (it's on lockdown), but this is so much more convenient.
