Day 50 of 365. My last cigarette? I was out running around today, stopped at two different grocery stores to pick up a carton of cigs, but neither had my brand. Said f**k it, this is too much aggravation and I can't afford this anymore anyway. Tobacco tax went up by a dollar a pack on 1 january, and that amounts to $40 a month for me. So I went to the drugstore and got nicotine lozenges.
I started smoking in 1969, when I was 17. My summer job that year was driving a delivery truck for a tobacco and candy wholesaler in new braunfels. There was a jalapeno canning factory next door. I'll leave it to you to think about what aroma that generated. 100+ degree heat and a truck full of cigars, cigarettes, and candy. Contact high. I started with cigars that summer.
I've quit for substantial amounts of time twice before. The first time I relapsed was after the business trip from hell. I'd been Austin-Chicago-Albany-NYC-SFO-DFW, to the family retreat on the lake (in 48 hours), and my then sister-in-law had left a pack of Camels on the kitchen table when I arrived at 2am. The second time was a cold and rainy night (much like tonight) when I was feeling sorry for myself (much like tonight).
I think I can do this. I would have done it on the 1st, but I still had almost a full carton of smokes left. New Year's resolution, delayed.
