Penguins galore!

There were a few newly hatched chicks, but these were mainly in the middle of the penguin huddle where it was warmest. So we just sat down on the edge of the mass and let the penguins come over to us. It was a massive privilige to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

""Miriam addresses her adoring public, many who came early to hear her speak. Other's, who had heared of her fame by word of mouth, were late and began to jump up and down at the back just so they could get a fleeting glimpse of her....."

Unique experience to last a lifetime for Miriam. Fabulous picture for the rest of us to envy!

Heh - it really was surprising just how curious they were of us :-)

Thank you for sharing your Antarctica pool. It is a wonderful documentary. It must be difficult to take those pictures when the temperature is so so cold. Your picture of what -50 degrees temperature would do to hot water is a great example. Your camera must get fogged up very very fast too. I'll never know how you managed to get such great pictures.

Wow, this is so wonderful. Thank you for sharing this!

Would you please tell me something more about penguins, are they always this curious? It looks like a welcoming committee here. ;-)

Thanks for all your kind comments :-)
@ miss cleopatra: At this time of year the penguins huddle together in big groups and take turns at the centre to keep warm and incubate their eggs. I've come across smaller Adelie and King penguins but these Emperors have been the most curious of the lot. I'm not sure why that is but I believe their eyesight isn't too good out of water, so knelt down us humans might look like large colourful penguins in need of keeping warm :-)
@ Fabee: I'm still sorting through my photos from this trip but I've got some close-ups taken from when I was lying on the floor (in a pile of penguin-poo as I later discovered) surrounded by penguins. I'll upload them soon :-)

It's interesting how curious they are (and apparently unafraid - they apparently know they don't have to worry about anything on the ice, except for the occassional leopard seal near the waterline).

Amazing shot! They seem so friendly, weren't they a bit twitchy given the newly hatched chicks were around?
