I adjusted the colour and contrast slightly in photoshop but it's not a fake, just an amazing aurora I was lucky enough to capture on camera over a 30s exposure at F3.5 and ISO 800 :-)

Very Magical exposure!
Did you note the color range changing much/
Though we're in Southern Maine we have had spells here (rarely) of Aurora borealis , some of the colors were brilliant and surprising red orange green pink purple white pulsating both slow and fast.

Thanks for your comments everyone :-)
Ctd 2005: Most of the one's I've seen have been green like this but on the odd occasion where a really strong aurora has flared up I've seen some pinks and reds.
Ackshrn & laura e: Hope you both one day see one of these. The photos just can't do them justice.
*atomtigerzoo: it was a realtively warm -40C :-p

Stunning--does your gear work OK in those temperatures?

BrynJ  Pro User  says:

Hi Andy. I've got a Nikon D70 and in freezing temperatures the LCD screen quickly stops working properly which is a bit of a nuisance but not that serious. It has to be really cold, below -30C for the battery to die. Also, I have to be careful to seal it in its camera bag properly when bringing it inside as otherwise water vapour will quickly condense on it and not do it any favours.

AnDy631  Pro User  says:

Yeah, I guess...the reason I ask is that I'm from Canada, and we get -40C where I'm from too, so I'm going to have to be careful with my new camera this winter. Thanks for the tip on the camera bag & the condensation, I never would have thought about that.

This is a beautiful picture of an aurora. I thought it would be fun to post a comment on the origin of these "mysterious" colorful auroras on Earth. They are the direct manifestation of the effect of the solar wind (wind of charged particles - protons and electrons - resulting from the &quot evaporation" of the 2 million degree hot solar corona in the interplanetary medium) on Earth. Basically, solar wind electrons reaching Earth are capture by the Earth's magnetic field and are channeled along the magnetic field lines that close at the poles. During their precipitation along the
magnetic field lines, they get energized and enter eventually in collision with molecules of our own atmosphere. This results in the emission of light, the Auroras. Their observed color depend on the nature of the molecules that the electron will collide with. For the curious, more infos can be found at the NASA educational website:

You are so lucky. I would really like to visit Antarctica but it's sooooo expensive... :-(

BrynJ  Pro User  says:

@Ypsoon: You're right, it is an expensive place to visit, and even on a tour ship you won't see much. Another option is to get a job down here. Many nations have bases in the Antarctic and all employ scientists, engineers, plumbers, carpenters, electricians, doctors etc :-)

We see Aurora borealis during all seasons here in Minnesota, USA. The summer showings tend to be white while the winter ones are colored. I love to watch their movement. Great shot!
