Flickr User Model, v0.3

Flickr User Model, v0.3 by soldierant.
Or "Camel's Back Broken." I like this last version, I really do, but I think there are a couple of misteps. I'd be really interested in what you think.. Leave a comment or (even better) a note and let's give this version a good community critique. I have some thoughts I'll post to Soldier Ant in a couple of days.

Excellent model! Did you make the people yourself, or are they part of a library somewhere?

Josh -- the little people are all handcrafted. I have ambitions to make a whole family of them available to the Web sometime soon. I'll post that site here when it's available.

The type of camera, exposure, data taken, etc. are not here - should they be added as bursts under "Camera" or is this more about the content of the photo. For example, I like to search photos by type of camera - I think others do so as well.

Awesome diagram!

Good question squidish: yes, I think I had originally included the 'Camera' concept to link to EXIF-style metadata like you note. (Actually, I guess, some metadata (camera type) would probably belong to the camera, while other data -- exposure settings, date taken, would probably be a property of the photo itself.) But between my original good intentions, and this final version, everything got so crowded that I never ended up getting to that. Maybe in version 0.4.. ;-)

The illustrator in me says: wow, beautiful design!

But the info-vis geek in me says, ugh: that's an awful lot of information to try to cram into one graphic! It's already pretty cluttered, and yet there's still lots missing (e.g. Content->MayOffend->Anyone ;-) What is the purpose of this exercise? What is the specific story you're trying to tell? Or is clutter actually what this is all about, and I'm just missing the sweet irony of it all?

But then the illustrator in me tells the info-vis geek to stop being such a noodge. ;-)

Great map. Is it an entire original design or do you use a specific software. ?

I created a (much) lighter version.

How flickr works ?

soldierant  Pro User  says:

Hey otherthings. Thanks for the praise and the constructive criticism. The purpose of the exercise is merely to map related concepts in the Flickr world, so I'd say the diagram (intentionally) lacks any one central 'argument' or thesis.

(Though one could argue that the design lends a certain emphasis to some of the related concepts: 'User' takes 'Photos' of 'Subject' for instance.)

So for me, part of the appeal is the self-directed nature of it. (Which, I guess, is me abdicating my responsibility as a designer.. to lead the eye and engage the mind in some narratively cohesive way.) I do think this final version probably over-reaches, and stumbles into 'jumbled mess' territory a bit, and quite a few people I've talked to seem to prefer the cleaner, simpler first version.

And vmaurin -- great diagram! It's fun to see alternate takes on the same subject matter. I've wanted, for awhile now, to build a structured .dot file of all the concepts and run it through GraphViz just to see what the resulting layout would look like. (Ah, scarce evening hours...)

To answer your question, I did the illustration in Adobe Illustrator (version 'CS' -- 11, really.)

Great work Soldierant... I've just started playing around with this style of lying out concepts myself and this series was a big inspiration. (Along with a great "Visual Thinking School" session w/Dave Gray) -- it's really changed how I look at a lot of things.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Very Great work. It helped me to know the whole strategy of flickr. I suggest that maybe you would like draw another map of youtube. Anyway, there are many things alike between these two websites.

Great. We all need new ways to display the data and the choices around us. An active version will be very usefull to be used as a map of flickr.
