Clara moved aside the fern to see what was glinting underneath. It was the key she had lost the day before. The hike didn't go as she had planned. And neither did the rest of the day. "Well, for fuck sake." she said out loud, echoing through the forest. And then she thought to herself, "if a woman cusses in the forest do all the trees hear her?"
Her eyes fixed on the lichen on the tree in front of her. It made her think of Daniel and his useless comments as they wandered, lost. "No, I'm quite sure that lichen only grows on the west side of trees." West, north it didn't matter they still wandered for hours.

And at some point they found the tree that was lichen covered on all sides. Now, with all sense of direction gone,Daniel and Clara were left to sort out who's compass they would trust.
And what was that shrilling knocking up in the branches?

Clara shuddred at the memory. Flapping wings and the sharp pecks on her head.

Her heart sank a bit as she reached down to pick up the key. She flashes back to the day Daniel gave it to her in a tiny yellow box with a big orange ribbon. The colors clashed but it was such a happy box! And the content brought tears to her eyes. It started to rain.

Dropping my GPS in the river is becoming a problem, I saw this same tree an hour ago. Not a good sign.

And Daniel, in his focus on the problem of becoming unlost, has totally missed the memory flash as Clara reclaims the once magic key. He thinks back to other walks where they have argued silently over whether they were truly lost or just, as he puts it, "bushwhacking". Even more distance are the idyllic early walks where they just did not care about being "right".
And worse, he has not even noticed the blood specs on Clara's head, or the quiet heavy breathing noise of something else nearby that is also curious about the blood.
