I remember when one of the Turbotrains caught fire near Sharon, MA. At that point, these troublesome units were pulled out of service. It was fun to ride in the end units, looking over the shoulder of the engineer.

I think I rode on something very similar in Japan a few years ago...it was a night train from Hakodate to Akita.
