a storm to move mountains

The idea for this picture came in a very roundabout way. First I wanted to use red. Then I picked a setting I wanted to use red in. Then I picked what I would use red in (prop/wardrobe/scenery). Then I thought about concept. Red signifying blood, menstruation, mother earth...Pouring from a girl, giving her life blood back to the earth. Chaos and movement all around, face obscured by hands, fabric billowing over the land, and a stormy sky above to set the tone.

The family who lived in the house next to my shoot came out to watch. The parents made sure my tripod didn't tip over in the extreme wind while the kids were fascinated by the 10-second timer.

It was so windy that when I finished I got in the car and felt that overwhelming sense of quiet and pounding in my ears. I'm sure you know what I mean.

But sitting outside was just as peaceful, sitting in the wind, hearing nothing but the whirring sounds, wondering how my picture would turn out.

the red material looks great here, like how you have spread it out horizontally and the brightness of it , and the mountains in the back with those hints of light on them is great , the confusion of her hair and hand placements are great too, it stands out more on black to me

@leslie - I wish I actually had a dress like that - instead I had one square of loose fabric that I had to make work...fun challenge though!

these works of art stand apart, unto themselves. and deserve to be singularities, not likened to anything but the artist herself... this is an experience.

    the billowing fabric is beautiful.
Great posing with the hands, hair, and dress.
    I really like this one.
Only bit of feedback/critique/opinion- if wanted- I would do a little less yellow in the sky. I like the antique vintage, but just a smidgen- only a smidgen!- less yellow.
and yes, smidgen is a word.

I love seeing you using red :) so intense!

  38. brookeshaden (25 months ago | reply)

@airgarten - That was not how it flowed naturally, though the wind was giving it some nice curves. I didn't really have a dress, only a small square of fabric that I hopefully photographed in a way that looked like a big dress...lots of pics+ moving around the frame :)

This is exceptional, even for you. That's astonishing.

So I'm sitting in a cafè in Detroit, and there's a woman paying for her meal who could be your twin sister. Before I just noticed this post from you, I seriously almost asked her if the mighty Mrs. Shaden had finally invaded Detoí... :)
