1920s - 1930s These black & white
images bring back to life the city
between the wars.
In the 1920s & 1930's Bristol was
experiencing a period of tremendous
change, both in the way that it looked
and the way in which its citizens lived
their lives. These selection of rare
archive photographs of Bristol, some of
which are published for the first time,
shows us fascinating glimpses of the
city at that time, a place of historic
traditions coming to terms with its role
as a modern British city.
See some of the old streets and
buildings that were soon to disappear in
the Blitz. The working port of Bristol
in 1934, where imports included grain
from North America and Oil from Persia.
Memories of Bristol's first cinema the
Bio, opened in Counterslip in 1908, and
by 1920 there were about 35 picture
houses in the city.
Festivities to mark Bristol - Brighton
week in 1933, including an air Pageant
at Bristol airport where locals enjoyed
aerobatic joy rides, the Pageant of
Bristol procession winding its way from
Queen Square to the Zoo and night scenes
of 'the Tramways Centre' with its
illuminations.
The celebration of the Silver Jubilee
of George V in 1935 and the Coronation
of George VI in 1937, where people of
Bristol flocked to the fun-fair on the
Downs and celebrated with great relish
at street parties bedecked with flags
and banners.
