I was pumped!

I was pumped!

A last minute trip to the countryside Sunday with my buddy Hugh was quite the experience. (They always are :) The roads were slick as the result of some freezing rain and snow the night before and with temps around the freezing mark and more rain the roads were positively treacherous. If we had known ahead we probably would not have headed out!

This was my first shot of the day. A little roadside attraction to start the day. I'll just bet some of you thought that I scanned this from one of the old Burns family albums ... not so! That doesn't mean I can't try to make it look like that though ;^)

Back in the day

Back in the day

As I am pouring through vintage albums of my family I came upon this little schoolhouse on the prairie. These days I photograph the few remaining one room schoolhouses and often wonder what life would have been like back in the day. My father, born in 1922, was visiting and he believes it was the old Jutland schoolhouse (east of Didsbury AB), and close to the family farm. He said the photo was taken before his school days which would put this circa 1915-1925. Somewhere in this photo are my Burns' uncles or great uncles. (Heck they were all great ;)

Update: The original name of this school in 1902 was Friedensaw, then in 1904 it became Berlin. After the war, WW1 German names had to be changed so it became Jutland. The first teacher was Peter Kliever or Miss Melrose. In 1956 the school was moved to Olds Alberta. I am in the process of finding out if the building still stands.

Truck Stop

Truck Stop

More gems from the trip to the "goldmine" in the Alberta countryside where I enjoyed the company of my friend and tour guide Jim as well as our flickr friend Ray. It is a good thing I had the wide angle with me, there was a tree right in front of this truck which I didn't feel any obligation to include in the shot!

Tigger's waiting

Tigger's waiting

Every once in a while you take a photo and you don't realize what a treasure it is until you put it on the big screen. This is one of those photos for me. I took this snap of a neglected boat with a long lens and my old D60 from the trestle bridge in Victoria BC. When I downloaded it I noticed the little stuffed tiger left behind. The next time I returned a few months later the little boat had been painted.

By all means ... view it in lightbox ... just click on the photo!
