Vishnu assumes the shape of a boar

Vishnu assumes the shape of a boar

Vishnu looked at the deluge, saw a lotus and said, “This lotus must rest on something”. Then, assuming the shape of a boar, he dived into the waters and killed the demon Golden-eyed who had thrown the earth to the bottom of the sea. He made the earth float over the ocean like a large ship.

Stirring of the ocean of milk

Stirring of the ocean of milk

At the beginning of time, things were lost in the deluge. The ocean of milk was stirred by the Slow Mountain used as a churning rod, secured by a snake (Sesha) used as a rope. Sesha was propelled by gods (devas) at one end and asuras (daityas) at the other. But they only succeeded when Vishnu appeared in the shape of a tortoise, Kurma, went to the bottom of the sea and served as support for the mountain.

They churned the ocean to obtain the nectar of immortality, Amrita, and successively caused a pot of nectar to surface together with the heavenly elephant (Airavata, Indra’s vehicle, and who is often depicted being saved from the jaws of a crocodile by Vishnu), the wish fulfilling tree, the wish fulfilling cow (Nandia, mother of Shiva’s bull Nandi)), the horse with four heads and the jewel worn on the chest of Vishnu. Vishnu also appeared as Mohini the seductress to distract the asuras while the devas shared the Amrita.

When Vishnu sleeps, i.e. when creation is withdrawn, he rests upon a thousand-headed gigantic serpent called “Remainder” (Sesha) who represents non-evolved form of nature. When creation is withdrawn it cannot entirely cease to be – there must remain in a subtle form, the germ of all that has been and will be, so that the universe may rise again. The serpent is the remainder of the destroyed universe. Consequently he can be said to represent eternity.
