Tiny People

Another notch on the wall
Tiny People by TalBright.
This is the wall built by Israel in Abu Dis, an Arab a neighbourhood in East Jerusalem. It divides Abu Dis into two. The wall is a "sophisticated" means of occupying land from Palestinians.

A person living on one side of the wall cannot move to the other side to go to work or school, to visit friends or family, to go to the doctor or just to take a trip somewhere when they feel like it.

In order to do any of these ordinary things they need to get a permit from the Israeli army, which may or may not be granted.

It is about 8 metres (26 feet) high. People look tiny next to it; maybe it was designed to make them feel tiny. Being humiliated and harassed by armed soldiers on a daily basis might also make you feel tiny. It might also make you want to leave your home and move elsewhere.

I am often asked for permission to use this photo. I'm happy to share it in order to promote a political statement against the separation wall.

...I thought the world tore down the wall!!?? This is a sight not many people in the west know exists - I did not - this is a powerful image indeed and a reminder that the world indeed is still not a free place for every one ... where is the conscience of the west now that communism has become nute - what about this and other forms of oppression that still exist??

Simon bar Giora - thanks for your comment, but consider the fact that this wall in the picture goes through an Arab neighbourhood. Does this mean that Arabs on one side of it are "terrorists" and the ones on the other side are not?

saul.davis  Pro User  says:

Tal you are being way too simplistic. Most Israelis agree that the wall is ugly and evil and also very necessary. No one is going to take it down until some other way is found to stop the anti-peace, murderers who sadly think that they are liberating Palestine by putting bombs in Israeli cafes, sniping at Israeli cars etc. The wall seems to be doing a good job. (And it is so photogenic.) If you want to know more read this www.seamzone.gov.il FAQ

Simon bar Giora [deleted] says:

Tal, your commentary suggests the wall is designed "to make them feel tiny", when in fact its because its there to prevent sniper fire on to Gilo neighborhood and other Jewish neighborhoods on, near or over the green line. When I was first going to Israel it was not unusual to go to Ramallah or East Jerusalem to shop or smoke Sheesha at a cafe among Arabs and I even wore a Kippah for I was in Yeshiva with Tzitit. This was even during the first intifada but this was the one with stones and knives not with guns (provided thanks to OSLO) and suicide bombs (made possible by PA under OSLO) that made up the second so called "intifada". I do not like the wall and to REMIND you and everyone that the Security Fence was a Left Wing Labor government under Ehud Barak initiative opposed by ALL right wing parties as dividing Israel. So, this was all Meretz and Labor inspired this fence idea but they did not consider where and how it would be built! I don't like the fence or if it cuts through Arab land or puts Jews outside of it or even that it makes a statement that somehow one side is "Israel" and one side isn't, To me and many others its all Israel on both sides but I am willing to share Israel with the Arabs, I want them to have civil autonomy, dignity, work, health but I want the security threat to cease to exist first. I am against the land for peace policy and its a proven failed experiment, one that rewards terror and punishes peace. The PA, Fatah claim they cannot control Hamas or Islamic Jihad and that out of there control so that means they cannot offer peace so why give them land? If thats the deal? it makes no sense. Meanwhile its the so called Palestinian Police who make up the Tanzim, Hamas, and other militant/terror groups and they demand to be paid to fight terror when they themselves are the terrorist! How insane is that? Not to mention that Hamas controls Gaza and is more powerful that Fatah. It is Israel ultimately that Fatah exists and it is Israel that protects them in the West bank from Hamas. This is pathetic.

Tal, chamooda, adina, no I do not think the Arab people on either side are terrorist. I think they have been wrongly brainwashed, manipulated to think that Israel can be overcome through war, terror, violence, riots, media propaganda, and international pressure instead of looking as how to make peace with Israel in a good way. They have been taught that they can outlast Israel and eventually replace it ALL (where you and your family live too Tal) to a Hamas Islamic Palestinian state. I am opposed to it. Maybe you want to live under Hamas rule? I am sure you would find it different from the Apartheid Israeli society you live in. Hamas and their supporters only want peace and there own nation so if you are a citizen of a one state solution governed by Hamas (in a democracy) I am sure you will find your place since you support them and you love peace. They will not like me very much so I do not want to live under Hamas rule. You are so sure Israel is the bad guys and the Palestinians are victims so I wish you luck living in Gaza City or Jenin. I think its dangerous there and unless I have an M-16 and my chevreh or at least A PRESS badge from the US and my camera but I rather have the M-16 or not go there. I was not concerned to go there pre-Oslo but since Palestinian control the security situation, economics, and life of Palestinians have declined all due to Fatah corruption and Arab terror.

Thats it. The fence is ugly but its protecting you and your family. If you belief that you are safe because you give more land or take down the check points and free the terrorist in Israeli prisons I think you are in for a nasty surprise.

Thanks for the long reply. I'm afraid there's nothing there I haven't heard before, many many times, and this is getting boring, even a bit pathetic, especially from someone who says other people are being brainwashed. You may think I am "chamooda, adina", but I do have some experience in this field, whatever you patronising tone may suggest. Maybe there are gaps that were not meant to be bridged. I don't intend to continue this discussion, I find this a waste of time.

I think, since there are all these nice well-intentioned Jewish people enjoying all the free space and lamenting how sad but necessary that wall is, that we simply rotate walls.

Now that the Palestinians have been imprisoned in Gaza since the early 90s and in the West Bank for much of the deacde, I think its time to turn the tables - I'm sure the Jews in Israel won't mind since they're all so deeply compassionate and concerned about security.

So for the next twenty years, let's cram all the Jews into tiny pockets of land encompassing less than a tenth of what is now the whole of Israel and the Occupied Territoires, and then wall them in and seal their borders off. Just for a decade or two, until the security situation improves.

We can build a special wall around Tel AViv, like the one around Qalqilya. And then of course to be fair we'll need 400 checkpoints between every Jewish city in there.

As everyone in Israel knows, this hasn't caused any real hardship to the Palestinians, so obviously they won't mind taking their turn at being inconvenienced.

Of course this wall might be ugly, but hey! It's necessary and all Palestinians agree it is for the best, so... chin up Israel! It's in everyone's best interest!
