Twitter connects people through a rich and active exchange of ideas, thoughts, observations, and interests in one, highly collaborative and promising ecosystem. The Twitterverse advances micro interaction and connections through an expanding network of applications, engendering the potential for macro reach and resonance online and IRL.

Lori Laurent Smith says:

You have a gift for organizing the complex, Brian. Love the idea of a spiral universe as a graphic foundation. Comments for improvement:

1. Add a legend that defines what each 'arm' means. Short definitions would help clarify, for example, the difference between Stream Management, Communication Management and Relationship Management.

2. You have Twitter in the center as well as in a couple of the arms. It's confusing what the message is with that approach. Personally I'd leave Twitter where it is and remove it from other places since it is implicit with that view that Twitter is all of the arms.

Somewhat related is Brightkite appearing in two arms. If you make an editorial decision that some apps will appear in multiple categories, it would be helpful to explain why to the user.

3. Why is event management separate from marketing/advertising? Since it only has one app, it might be better served to fold into the larger category (at least for the 1.0 version).

4. IMHO, I wld add an arm called 'content' to include apps like Twitpic (images), Twerbose (words), Seesmic or similar (video).

Hope that helps. Can't wait to see your next version.

Perhaps a section on Branding (or integrate it into the Marketing string)? I work for www.twitbacks.com/, which allows Twitter users to brand their background, and there are other similar background apps out there as well that you could add to that (branding) section.

@b_d_solis Thanks! And congratz to the virality - (very expected given the Twitter Sociology/Social Psychology/Anthropology related to your point at #disruptivemedia of "introvert" SM conversations - conversing the tools in themselves rather than content and form of conversation in a wider context - thus my pointer towards the Social Media Maketing Compass!) - search.twitter.com/search?q=twitterverse

Just wondering re: selection criteria for this Twitterverse thingie? As referred to, the number of apps are so many more than you managed to include. I understand the graphic has a natural limit not to be cluttered, but there are some obvious exclusions I wonder strongly about -

First and foremost - TweetDeck! I tried to look it through, but I just can't find it! Should be nearby Twhirl (check those two apps with a vs. in Google search, dude...). Another one - TwitPic?? By far one of the most popular twitter-related services overall! TweeTube falls into that category also (in one leg "media sharing" that is missing overall).

With these top three on my mind (there are more missing like Twtvite that already has become one standard invite/event app for the "event management" leg), I just wonder how the underlying research process was designed.

Check e. g. blendingthemix.com/2009/01/23/the-most-popula r-100-twitte... to complement the list with some "obvious" missing-outs.

Moreover - how do you define "twitterverse"? Isn't conversations about twitter in general, not just apps and services, a part of Twitterverse as well? Maybe to include some Blogerati solely focusing Twitter with a great reader-base and influence. E. g. Probloogger Darren Rowse's twitip.com if we slide into this area of the greater "twitterverse".

Otherwise, stunning content with great sorting and abstraction in the meta-analysis and appropriate graphics to support the conclusions in the findings - as always in the Jess3 / Solis Joint Venture!

This points to a great SM Compass as well! Truly looking forward to it!

Peace,
Anders

PS. Pointing you also to my contribution I did to the trend report "Urban Lifestyle Report - New Media" from January 2009, "Microblogging? All know what it is, no one knows what it is", www.urbanlifestylereport.com/FreeULRNM.html - where I included a list of Twitter apps and some related blogs as well in the resource list attached to that article. DS.

@Lori_Laurent_Smith

I disagree. Some of the services related to Twitter in its core services are offered by Twitter themselves. Twitter Search used to be Summize but they bought it. But anyways, it's hard to judge where to draw the line. Is the core in the middle only the microblogging service, with the core functions @replies, DM and following/follower? Or is it the whole brand in itself? What does the "twitter" in the middle represent? If you clarify that it could be a point to have it both in the middle and where twitter themselves offer some of the core services most popular.

Moreover, with my add of also mentioning Twtvite for event management, it is justified to have a leg on its own.

Peace,
Anders

BTW, related - reminding us of the BW feature with its slideshow;

www.businessweek.com/technology/content/apr20 09/tc2009041...

Twitter surely building a social media operative system - a core of a growing ecosystem of apps at large illustrated by the conversation prism, where twitter for now takes a central position - already at stage where the conversation prism covered different cat's of social media services, twitter had a petal of its own. Taking a dedicated map of twitter-only as next step reconfirms Twitter as one of the overall most important apps and tools in the social media landscape. BUT - it's the phenomenon of MICROBLOGGING that is in the core, transcending online conversation and shared discovery through dialogue. Keep focus on that, and not Twitter in itself. It evolves!

I'd love to see a "arm/strand" that identifies tools and apps for linking twitter to our other social networks(beyond facebook) perhaps entitled social media integration (or omniverse for short) - a girl can dream, can't she?

Lori Laurent Smith says:

@andersabrahamsson

Excellent feedback overall - esp the add of the BW article.

I appreciate your divergent opinion. Let me clarify my point as I saw it more in a brand-centric way. With Twitter in the center, it reminds me of "powered by Intel" -- that these seemingly unrelated apps all have Twitter in common. Or conversely, without Twitter, would there be a need for the apps at all?

What's more, the average user doesn't make the distinction between the various components of the Twitter experience -- search, conversing, DM, finding friends, etc. -- it's all part of Twitter. So if the Twitterverse is indeed 'powered by Twitter', it is tautological to also include Twitter on the arms as well.

With either premise (your point or mine), perhaps what we are both saying is that a definition is in order about what Twitter should represent.

Re: Event management point. I agree if there are more apps to include, it should have its own arm. But if there is only 1 or 2, for the overall look of the 1.0 release, it might make sense to roll them up into a larger category.

Best,

Lori

@llaurentsmith

Yes - what is it that we talk about - all things that Twitter is including, or everything that the ecosystem that twitter creates has within? We forward question to @briansolis ...

What is it that we talk about here?

Re: event management - dunno, but marketing in general is not to the point either. Tweetups IRL could be added both with amiando and eventbrite as event managers somewhat related to the twitterverse for organizing tweeple offline get-togethers. But again, it falls back to what we talk about here - where do we draw the line?

Ping.fm, for example, is a generic one-stop-shop social updater, that has twitter included as one outlet. With that logic, both amiando and eventbrite should be included, since a URL-shortened link to an event page certainly shows up regularly in the tweetstreams, whereas the Twtvite is surely more twitter-integrated.

Brian?

Headache ahead...

"not as simple as it seems" ...

Anders

This is really well done and a great experiment. I especially like that it's pretty to look at, as it makes the information easy to digest. There's a lot to think about here, and I imagine as time goes on, tracking the progression, development and intersection of the apps that are created will be an valuable way to keep tabs on the general progress of the Twittersphere. I wonder what it will look like down the road?

Designwise, the apps and services that have graphic logos, as opposed to just type logos, are much easier to read, pick out and identify. There's certainly something for designers to learn from that.

I'd suggest adding Nambu to the 'Communication Management' string, I've recently become a big fan.

I've only scanned the longer comments, so forgive me if this has been suggested.

It would be interesting if relative placement along the spiral arms reflected the usage or virality of a Twitter tool. For example, if usage of Twellow has grown faster or larger than usage of, say, Headup, then Twellow would be located closer to the center of the Twitterverse.

I recognize this introduces additional research and logistical problems to creating what is already a helpful tool. But it would also elevate the map into an analytical reference that people (particularly developers) continuously referred back to in order to see how their tool stacks up.

Thanks for creating this. It's great stuff.

@b_d_solis - now after some viral frenzy, it really is justified to give feedback on two things echoing in this thread;

1. Selection criteria (virality of apps?)

and

2. Letting different parameters resound and get visualized thru proximity to center and/or size of logo

Also - the relations in between apps are not clarified either.

Could you do one of your dissertation-blog-posts-turned-into-an-ebook where the full methodology gets transparent? It would increase credibility. For me, it is still a very very very strange happening that e. g. TweetDeck or TwitPic are not included. And with probably over 1000 Twitter apps in the whole Twitter-as-Unix ecosystem (ref @stoweboyd post www.stoweboyd.com/message/2009/04/dave.html - where even his work of developing the Twitter Syntax echo this sentiment! - www.stoweboyd.com/message/2009/05/microsyntax org-microsyn..., or the Social OS (to echo your own points www.briansolis.com/2009/04/social-os-battle-b etween-faceb..., it gets even more crucial to have the "selection criteria" there.

For me, a new arm with "Twitter Clients", embedding alot of other functions from the other arms justifies an arm in itself.

1. TweetDeck
2. Twhirl
3. Seesmic Desktop
4. CoTweet

but there are lots of others. See e. g. @guykawasaki and his posting blogs.openforum.com/2009/04/27/24-ways-to-cha nge-my-life-...

And - to separate it - to get Mobile Client (native app) as well as Mobile Interface (browser-interface-on-steroids) as well, to separate (not to have "mobile application" only).

1. Gravity for Symbian S60 v5 (Nokia 5800 one of the major and actual iPhone killers!)
2. Tweetie
3. TwitterFon

and for interface;

1. dabr.co.uk

ERGO SUM: Twitter Client is an established concept. And the major additional app to actually make microblog management manageable. Because - the original twitter web interface only serves two purposes:

1. To sign up and design your #twittentity using alot of #twitteracy ABC (will blog about this today, feel it is mature to do so...) in order to

2. ...justify and trigger a follow-back when people land at your profile.

Avatar/Authenticity/Bio/Bloglink/Background/ Brand/Character(s)Counts(s): ConnectConversateCo-DiscoverCollaborateCo-cre ateCrowdsourceCommit ...

...for the #twitteracy ABC I will blog away!

For a preview, see Social Media Club Östergötland Tweet Stream for the procedure -twitter.com/smcogtl

Then, beyond that, the "add follow" client takes the stream elsewhere.

Also, the @stoweboyd posting on differences within EMAIL - IM - MICROBLOG serves as background for a lengthier analytical reasoning before we can call this 1.0...

www.stoweboyd.com/message/2009/05/from-email- culture-to-s...

There is something BIG here going on! We all know it. But we need to conversate and co-create like this to make things understandable.

And, beyond #disruptivemedia post-event convos juiced by

www.flickr.com/photos/paulamarttila/351601929 9/in/set-721...

at Elverket, Stockholm,

we all know we need to separate the gold from the ore.

Common Nonsense to be replaced by Sense.

And more Original Thinking in both blogosphere and statusphere!

That is what is SIGNIFICANT, yes?
