Another cyclist killed by the NYPD

Another cyclist killed by the NYPD by SuperEvilBrian.
Carl Nacht, a cyclist, was killed by an NYPD tow truck making an illegal turn across the Hudson River Greenway.
No charges were brought against the driver, I imagine he was awarded somehow for killing one more person not driving a car.
The NYPD has an unwritten task to detain, harass and even kill anyone not driving a car. They do this through a combination of direct action and inaction (in enforcing traffic laws, investigating collisions and turning the other cheek).
I'm sure there are a few decent cops on the NYPD but they are vastly outnumbered by the thugs, cowards and criminals who wear a badge and polyester uniform - from Bloomberg all the way down to the crossing guards and the asshole who drove the towtruck that killed Mr Nacht.
I'm sure there were undercover cops surveilling the memorial that Times Up! held - I wish the the thought of all of this was outlandish and crazy but it's not.
And that needs to change.

I'm amazed by all of this. It still doesn't make sense, it's like the plot of some horribly unbelievable B Movie.

I wish it weren't the case, but I think it's cops everywhere. Here in Orlando I was out downtown one night (which is where all the nightlife is) and amid streams of hundreds of passersby, the cops had one of downtown's ubiquitous bike rickshaw drivers pinned to the sidewalk, one cop's knees holding his back to the ground, another one with his hands holding down his head. If I had had my camera I would have captured it-- the kid was asking, with genuine fear in his voice, if they could please explain what he had done. It was horrible, but the sort of odious brutality I've come to expect from Florida law enforcement. What you get when your society allows extreme liberties (like people carrying guns): you need far more extreme laws (and law enforcement) and if you're not willing to pay for it to be carried out in a professional and civilized manner, thugs are what you get.

From what I heard from my beautiful friend Tammy, Mr Nacht was a doctor who made house calls via his bike. His wife was there at the scene as it happened. Tammy arrived shortly after - she told me it took a very long time for the ambulance to arrive. I don't remember how long she said, maybe 15 minutes. Maybe more maybe less.

If it were a motorist, the ambulance would have been there immediately.

The driver made an illegal turn and killed a cyclist. No charges or any sort of citation were brought against the driver - who was working for the NYPD.

The NYPD has under cover cops at many gatherings and other places where they should not - its an undisputable fact.

NYC is a strange city with askew priorities.

Sagam - you're a creepy bastard for having no photos available. No contacts or any other information in your profile.

I wouldn't be surprised if the NYPD monitored Flickr and blogs - they already have still photos and video (illegally captured by the way) of me as well as many other people.

The idea of causing chaos and closing major parts of the city causing traffic jams (that also jam the FDNY and other emergency vehicles) in the few areas where the overabundant cars don't and idiot drivers don't already cause traffic in the name of keeping said traffic flowing makes no sense.

Endangering public saftey by driving trucks down sidewalks, bike paths and into oncoming traffic at high rates of speed with NO lights or sirens in the same of maintaining public saftey from the dangerous cyclists makes no sense.

I don't get it. I don't see how the waste of tax money and obsurd abuse of power to the point of being comical is good.

Sagam - come to NYC and ride a bike here. Spend a little time in the streets and you'll know what we mean.

I missed where I wrote "officers". The NYPD employs tens of thousands of people in all capacities.

I grew up thinking that cops were mostly good and descent - and they are. I've been in a jam or two where a cop helped me out.

Just not here. Not in NYC. I'm not the only one who shares my opinion and I wouldn't believe what I write about those pigs if I didn't see it FIRST HAND. With the exception of Mr Nacht (you know, one of those dangerous, scary cyclists who dared to ride on the BIKE LANE ... he was a doctor who made house calls via bike)

My facts are straight. If they're skewed. they're at least better than your grammar. Besides, you don't even have a real Flickr account. You're a coward and a loser.

How often are you harrassed by the NYPD and how often do you seem them blatantly violating the laws they're supposed to enforce? Ever been pulled off of your bike in traffic because the cop decided I might break a law that might exist?

Ever been questioned by police as to why you rode out of the bike lane on a busy street by cops who have their scooter completely blocking the bike lane? I can go on.

I'll leave your comment up for a few days then I'll delete it because you're an isolated moron.

Go drink a few beers, reload, and praise Jesus.

I blocked two Flickr users who are either perverts who have accounts just to find photos of children or are NYPD and have accounts to find we "trouble makers" (or some other nonsese).

They made comments here but having no profiles, no photos, no icons, nothing, made me think they were up to something.

Its strange, many of my bike photos in NYC and many I tag with NYPD have these mysterious users leaving comments.

The two screen names I blocked are:
Azkids
Sagamorealam.

This is Azkid's comment above:

"These trucks are not driven by Officers...get your facts correct before you downplay New Yorks Finest. Also, what qualify`s you for your opinion`s on Officers....just get out of "Rikers"??" "

And here are sag's comments (which aren't as dumb as the other guy's)

"Clearly the NYPD gets weird regarding Critical Mass.
But there are some pretty outlandish claims in this piece.
I'll credit that the memorial was staked out.
Without any evidence whatsoever the idea that the driver hit this bicyclist intentionally or through some sort of willful negligence is absurd.
If the people conducting said memorial believe those things then its somewhat understandable that the NYPD would want to know what they were up to, though.
I'm all for the restoration of proper American civil liberties and the demilitarization of our society.
And for bicycling.
But I don't see how we are going to get there if we don't use current reality as a springboard."

My reply that starts with "the drive rmade an illegal ... " is between the comments here. I'm sorry for making this comfusing.

"Brian,

Once I get to do some for myself personally I will put photos up.

I have lived in New York for several years and grew up on Long Island. I've been taking photos around the city in earnest for just a few weeks now which has (along with my longstanding NYCLU alignment) aprised me of the on-the-streets situation. I wouldn't be surprised if the NYPD monitored some sites either, either officially or just the many officers with other things going on in their lives. For example among the police who've asked why I'm photographing this or that I've found a few fellow amateur photogs to chat with.

I agree with your sentiments generally, and to an extent, but feel it is critical that we stop short of making wild and very serious accusations/inferences because, at minimum, those drive us further apart. Not only police and civilians, right and left, but among the left, or whatever we are.

Anyway, see you around. Please keep biking, posting, and keeping reasonably safe."

I generally don't censor or block comments with the exception of when they're left on certain photos by unidentifiable users.

Wow, you guys are kind of ridiculous. I understand how it sucks to be a cyclist buy what to you expect in NYC traffic and a huge tow truck I think the cyclist could have avoided. But than again I wasn't there. So just food for thought.

First off, your comment doesn't make sense. I just noticed you don't live in NYC and you're 15. What in the hell do you know about anything? NYC is not the backwater shit hole where you live. The NYPD is not the breve heroes you see in movies and they're not the protectors of the city like they pretend to be in the myths they believe of themselves.

I have no fear of NYC traffic, or it's lame police or cabbies or anyone.

Dr Nacht was hit by a tow truck making an illegal turn into him. Dr Nacht wasn't drunkenly joyriding in the Westside Highway, he was in a protected bike lane.

I know you don't have much of a clue about anything that happens outside of your office or car, but it's not what you hear on Fox news or what the NYPD says.

R.Menor - You have to show me where I said the truck drivers were cops. I don't remember writing that anywhere. I might be mistaken. I see you're equally ill fitted to comment on the above photo as well. The morons and lesser of the Great Unwashed have a curious knack of showing themselves proudly as a fabled king did in his new clothes.

I know traffic laws only apply to cyclists and no one else. What if some guy in a big SUV drove down the sidewalk killing a few people. Would that be OK? Maybe he just "needed to get where he was going".

I don't understand why some people are so proudly ignorant. Dr Nacht was a doctor making house calls, not some annoying hipster.

And why do you people think traffic and the related ills are so good? It's bad for everything from the economy to our health to the environment. You don't breathe air and you hate trees and grass, so you don't care about the last thing. But I happen to like green stuff and the little critters and other natural things.
