David Beckham

David Beckham by Brian Harrington Spier.
This man gets everywhere! Here he is above the Shang'hai Centre. It may come as no surprise that millions of people from the countryside seem to know only four words of English - Hallo - Bye'bye - David and . . . . . Beckham.

Thanks for snapping this great pic and sharing it with the Creative Commons. I paired it with an article that we just posted to Policy Innovations: Beckhanomics and the globalization of sports.

I am delighted you used this picture. I bet McClaren's current non-descript English team wish they had an internationally marketable asset like Beckham even it was simply to sell tickets. At least he scored goals! Rooney? A hopelessly unmarketable faceless ' toughy' . Owen? He was a hero in Central Asia where I saw many lads wearing his shirt. But he hasn't worn an English shirt since falling over in Germany. In China, Beckham is still much valued since he personifies the once attractive side of English football.
