I'm back from a few rough months, including my mom passed away and we sold our house. We're trying to unpack now but we never seem to find the boxes with the important things like shoes, coats, phone chargers....
But I did find this photo, more neon from Mansfield - a couple blocks north of the Lincoln Highway and across from the town's restored carousel. CIty News is an original sign. Coney Island is a maybe 10 years old. I'm standing in front of Main Street Books, a great store that has hosted me many times.
My favorite story from there was after a signing for my book on Isaly's Dairy/Klondike Bars. Some 300 people snaked around the room and out the door. There were reporters and TV crews, it was great! I promised some folks I'd stop by the tavern next door when I was done. So I did, box of books under my arm, and tried to explain I didn't need a seat yet, I was looking for people. [Stern looks back at me.] So I explain I was the guy next door, y'know, with the big crowd. ["Didn't see it, never heard of you."] And so ended my 15 minutes of fame in Mansfield. I left, never finding my friends, but did find an excellent all-night cafe.
chathamshooter, army.arch, The Real Devil Doll, Tennessee Wanderer, and 17 other people added this photo to their favorites.

I used to work a block away from there as a reporter at the News Journal! I remember the Coney, the newsstand and, of course, the tavern very well.
