The Skate Park

    Newer Older

What used to be a Marina or some kind of entertainment club, is now a place of graffiti, decay, and skateboarding. A few skaters showed up while I was photographing the scene and they proceeded to empty out the remaining water in the pool so they could play.

It was a members only yacht club frequented by folks like the Beach Boys, Jerry Lewis, the Marx Brothers and Frank Sinatra. Most of them kept a boat moored here along with hundreds of other boat owners. It was designed by Albert Frey, noted mid century architect. The renovation will adhere to his original design. The club is scheduled to open in November and will house a museum, visitor center, coffee bar and community center. We anticipate getting the boat house up and running for canoe/kayak/paddle boat rentals.

Wow! I'll have to go back and visit when it's complete. It would be great to see the change in such a short period of time.

The Salton Sea is a must see for everyone and is a prime example of the unfathomable affects of our efforts to alter/defy nature. Wear close-toed shoes and a bio-hazard mask. Pictures cannot suffice in preparing anyone to the realities of this place. Saving the town and it's efforts to bring back the "hey days" are the last of its problems.

The pictures are stunning in every respect. It leaves you in a feeling of awe and disgust all at once. It can answer that question of "How bad can it get?" What looks like a darker shade of sand from afar are mass areas of dead tilapia. Watch your step, what appears like a piece of wood is likely a dried bird. It forces you to think about our impact on the world...on a very personal level.

Do visit! It is an eye-opening experience - with re-engineering, we have dug our hole just a little deeper and just as is the case for the water...there is no easy way out.

Warning: If you are anywhere to child-bearing age, get advisement from your physician prior to visiting.
