Columnar Basalt

This basalt forms in columns which are oriented vertically, with the polygons (in this case mainly hexagons) forming as the basalt cools and shrinks. A similar phenomena occurs with needle ice or pipkrake ice crystals.

I think that it must take rapid cooling, I have observed this in a number of locations in Washington State.
