    The maze is created from Kurume azalea, which is a hybrid of Rhododendron obtusum and Rhododendron kiusianum, both native to the island of Kyushu, Japan.

      ...and another thing... It's a great garden, and excellent architecture. My wife and a friend are heading down in April for geraden tours of Venice Beach areas, and will be making a side trip here. I wish I could go - but work intervenes.

      Great photo. I visited the Getty Center soon after it opened, and this garden did not look very promising. I remember thinking that it looked like a barrow pit leftover from construction and rehabilitated by planting some small perennials in it. I am delighted to see that it has matured into such an interesting space.
      Loved looking through all your Getty Center photos. Love that SoCal light.
