Palm Jungle - Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden![]() Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden "Palm Jungle" is a forest of naturalized Alexandra palms Archontophoenix alexandrae
Origin: North Queensland, Australia Some info from a descriptive sign: These palms were introduced to Hawaii over 100 years ago. They have escaped cultivation and have spread throughout the East Hawaii coast. Common names used are Hilo palm and King palm. You will see many have sprouted roots from the trunk. This spectacular occurence happens in very humid growing conditions. THese very specialized roots are known as Adventitious roots. Kingdom: Plantae Division: Magnoliophyta Class: Liliopsida Family: Arecaceae Genus: Archontophoenix 1041308 470 Commentsfreddyb. says:In New Zealand, particularly in the North of
the North Island where the subtropical
climate encourages unbelievable growth, we
have all sorts of problems with a huge number
of plants. Most of them are 'garden escapes'
such as Agapanthus, Pinus radiata
(Californian pine) which is being used in
plantations and self seeding everywhere and a
species of wattle. Phoenix palms are also
banned in and around Auckland. I work on
restoration projects around here as a
volunteer and weeds are a nightmare.
