Açaí

Feira do Açaí.

Dentro destes paneiros há açaí fresquinho recém-chegado das ilhas que rodeiam Belém e de outros interiores ribeirinhos, vindos em barquinhos pô-pô-pô. O açaí é vendido no próprio cais do porto para os comerciantes locais, para ser batido com água e vendido na forma líquida. O comércio é feito do modo mais "feira" possível, com gritaria, bagunça e muita pechincha!

Inside these baskets there's fresh açaí berries that just came from the islands or small towns near Belém, transported in popopo boats (diesel motor-driven boats that sound just like this, hence the name). The açaí berries are sold as they arrive, in the very Ver-o-peso market docks. People who buy them in natura are generally owners of açaí shops, were the berries are smashed with water and the seed is extracted. The result is a thick juice. Selling açaí is made in the traditional market way: salers screaming out loud, customers crying for lower prices and lots of good-old healhty mess!
