About World Environment Day 2007
World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

Tromsø, Norway
The World Environment Day slogan selected for 2007 is Melting Ice – a Hot Topic? In support of International Polar Year, the WED theme selected for 2007 focuses on the effects that climate change is having on polar ecosystems and communities, and the ensuing consequences around the world.

The main international celebrations of the World Environment Day 2007 will be held in Norway. UNEP is honoured that the City of Tromsø will be hosting this United Nations day (read the press release). Please visit the Norwegian Polar Institute WED website for more information on the celebrations in Norway [English] - [Norsk].

The day's agenda is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. World Environment Day is a people's event with colourful activities such as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns.

...some will say..."she is ridiculous...doesnt she know that the "power" lays elsewhere?"..."doesnt she know that so small individual attitudes do not work at all?"..."what is she...a dreamer...an absolute ignorant?"..."who does she think she is?"...

It doesnt matter.
If each one spends at least a single second to think about this...it was WORTH it to do this post.

Good morning Petra...you are so 'right on', if each person does just a tiny bit, recycle, turn off a light, plan errands wisely to use less gas in the car, little things that 'add up' when lots of people do them...and the bonus, more money in your pocket! and your lovely photo is a great reminder of what we WILL loose if nothing is done.

Very happy to see your intervention of this so important theme who is a great theme of peace!

The environment is the third dimension of peace on this earth!

The first is our inner peace, the second is the peace with others and the third is the peace with our environment!

We have to develop a peaceful behavior in our world in a correlated rights: right to peace; right to the life and right to a healthy environment!

If we arrive to apprehend the interdependence between various dimensions of peace; if we arrive to understand various significances of peace and their application in our everyday life and if we arrive to promote the respect, solidarity and the responsibility.... maybe we'll have a chance... but I'm not optimist cause we have still a lot of problems with the two first dimensions! :(
