Mount Pleasant Fire #19

    View big and on black

Backstory for those coming here from Explore: this was an 8-alarm fire in an apartment building in Washington DC, only the second in the district's history. It was 3 blocks away from my house and I was able to document the critical hour in which the fire threatened to spread to adjacent buildings but was finally brought under control. Amazingly, none of the residents were hurt but 200 people, mostly low-income families, are now homeless.

The water ran out seconds after I took this photo. They lowered this guy and then it took them several minutes to get more water.

(the full set has much more)

UPDATE: I'll be writing more about this shortly at my blog.

Unreal. I live a block away and I could smell the smoke from inside my apartment....and my windows were closed.

      amazing, and beautiful.
I like taking pictures of fire, I have done so many times at home with bonfires or braais(barbecues), this is just so much more than that.
all I can say is Awesome.

Thanks all. Reminder for those in DC... For the 200 people who lost their homes, Neighbors' Consejo is taking food and clothing donations at 3118 16th St, NW, and monetary donations (for emergency shelter, medication etc) are being collected at Pfeiffer's Hardware on Mt. Pleasant Street.

I'd rather have been taking pictures of a bonfire.

Awesome pics...great series...as someone who has had a house fire, it is hard to see these without reliving our own history. That is what is so great about photography and you captured me and these images perfectly!! Thanks!

You really got some wonderful shots of the fire!

So sad that all those people are now homeless, but at least there weren't any fatalities.

i am a former resident of that building. i lived on the right side of the building which the fire did not touch. i am very fortunate. please donate to those that were less fortunate at www.neighborsconsejo.org/

Looking at the thumbnail I thought this was a scene from Battlestar Galactica. Great shot, good to know that nobody was hurt.
