iPhone OS 2.2 Saved Image Bug![]() ![]() Update - 27 January 2009 - 22:15
It looks as though the image resizing/resampling bug has been fixed in regards to images LARGER than the iPhone's native resolution. (>320x480.) Unfortunately, images that are AT native resolution, when copied from Aperture or iPhoto using iTunes exhibit a similar fuzziness. Please see the information I have posted over at www.brandoniain.com/iphoneimagebug Update - 27 January 2009 This morning Apple released a software update [http://pnt.me/CN7xq6] that supposedly fixes this image resizing bug. I have not yet installed the update, but when I do I will report back. Update: As confirmed by Scott Johnson, the iPhone is definitely upscaling a thumbnail of the downloaded image. In iPhone OS 2.1, images that were saved from an email message or a website that were larger than the iPhone's native resolution were scaled down and resampled - presenting you with a clear image on screen. iPhone OS 2.2 does not resample the images and you end up with a fuzzy, pixellated image. Try this out yourself. On your computer, resize one copy of an image to no more than 480 pixels on the long side and a second copy to about 640 pixels on the long side. Email both to your phone, and save them to your camera roll by tap-holding on the images in mail then selecting Save 2 Images. Open up the Photos mobile application and view the results. If your phone works as mine does after the 2.2 update, the image that was 480 pixels will be crisp and clear and the image that was 640 pixels will be fuzzy and pixellated. Commentsbatterpunts says:Hold on, the fuzzy image looks like it was
scaled down to about 30-40% of the original
size, and then resampled back upwards to 480.
No simple absence of resampling could cause
that type of fuzzy pixels.

For illustrative purposes, I used Photoshop CS4 to scale down the 640 pixel image to 480 pixels.
