Child Brides

Child Brides by Brajeshwar.
India has thousands of child brides. The unfortunate young woman shown here feeding the infant from the giant coconut in foreground has been seen on Calcutta's streets day after day with he child. Her misery is more than typical thousands of India's unfortunates.

Is this an image taken in recent times or from the post-colonial periods, because the attire of the young girl and the people in the background seem rather old.

What i like about the image - is the expression captured. Also the coconut used as a measure against the young girl and her child.

What i dont quite like is the implication about 'thousands' of child marriages in India. While there might be cases of child marriages in weaker economical sections of the society, it is not a rampant phenomenon as you make it out to be.

Yes, this is an old photo perhaps shot during world war by an American Military Photographer. I have collected here with the permission of the publisher.

This is an extraordinary photo, The girl is obviously in anguish. The existance of the weaker economical sections of society, the so called "untouchables" in India, is a sad statment for a nation with such a long history.

Yes, I think it is the "Early Marriage" tradition of India at that time.
