Baby Girl
Portrait of a rescued dog at The Humane Society of Greater Akron, OH. "Bessie". Her ancestors were brought to the United States in the mid - 1800's by Boston-Irish immigrants. Originally bred from a variety of bulldogs and terriers. In America, the Pit Bull flourished. It was one of the most popular breeds, highly prized by a wide variety of people. The Pit Bull was used to represent the US in WW1 artwork; popular companies like RCA and the Buster Brown Shoe Company used the breed as their mascots. A Pit Bull named Petie starred in the popular children's television series, Our Gang; a Pit Bull mix named Stubby became a decorated WWI hero. Pit Bulls accompanied pioneer families on their explorations. Laura Ingalls Wilder of the popular Little House books owned a working Pit Bulldog named Jack. Famous individuals like Theodore Roosevelt and Helen Keller owned the breed. It was during this time that the Pit Bull truly became America's sweetheart.
Unfortunately our love affair with the Bull Terrier has diminished and has been replaced by arguments on breed specific legislation. In my experience the issues which provoke BSL are much more a product of canine owners than of canine breeds.

the national geographic special on the training of the Vick pit bulls show what loving dogs they are.

Humans make mistakes and animals have to carry the can.
In Germany Pitbulls, Bullterrier, Mastiffs and such got discredited couple years ago because they had become favorite breeds for criminals (pimps, drugdealers etc.) in the big cities and had been trained to bite. After a some accidents where small children had been seriously injured muzzles and leashes for those breeds became obligatory. Very many ended up in animal homes because owners didn't want to be seen anymore with "killer-dogs".

Baby Girl was still in Explore the last time I looked (a few minutes ago)........YAY. I'm so pleased. She's a beautiful girl and I feel sure she will find a forever home - probably as a result of this gorgeous portrait. Everyone loves her :-)
