Just Arrived - Red Knots

Newer Older

Red Knots have recently arrived along the Delaware River (USA). An Audubon biologist was next me when I took this shot. He told me that a Red Knot nearby had leg bands that indicated it was tagged in Argentina. Red Knots are in trouble. The number of birds that migrate from South America to their breeding grounds, on the edges of the Artic, have dramatically declined.
This year's count of Red Knots is currently being conducted.

Excellent shot ... btw I understand the drop in Red Knot population has been linked to the overfishing of horseshoe crabs in the Delaware Bay...

This is getting lots of views I bet because when I searched for Red Knots it comes up on top of the pile. !! It is a lovely shot. Just talking to Geoff Coe about the fact he missed seeing them in De. I am going over to Michele's soon and will be keeping an eye out for them. Sad they are declining.
