Under/Over The Boardwalk ~ Endangered Piping Plover ChickParent Piping Plover (See detail below) Edge of walkway. ![]() This Piping Plover Chick (endangered) was one of two that hatched 7 days ago. The parents (one in background and below) chase after them constantly as their little ones scurry across the beach in search of food. Piping Plover chicks are not fed by the adults! From the moment they hatch they're on their own for food. However the adults fearsly guard them (see EBird cool fact) as their chicks move in & out of the dunes onto the beach to feed. This one is on top of a very busy beach walkway. It also tried to go under it!

Cool Fact from EBird: Intruders near a Piping Plover nest are chased and may be pecked or bitten. In Manitoba, one Killdeer was observed entering a Piping Plover territory where it was bitten so hard on the leg that it limped for the rest of the summer.
